2021-01-14, Thursday
This is an important day and not just because today is my birthday and 1/3
(which I didn't get a third of a wish for!), but because it's the 68th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the Andrea Doria.
On that voyage, my grandfather left for the U.S., where he stayed some 20 years.
But it is not so much to celebrate the luxurious liner, from the days when ships looked like ships and not like floating barracks and wore an elegant black and white livery with the national colors on the smokestack, but to remember a hero, never mentioned, definitely forgotten: the commander Piero Calamai.
He saved all the passengers and crew
(over 1,700 people) from the disaster caused by the third officer of the Stockholm and, to this day, this remains the most impressive naval rescue of all time and is studied by the Naval Academy of Annapolis.
What a difference with today's characters who strenuously defend untenable positions because they they don't have the dignity to recognize proven errors!
And I celebrate with a grand shaving!
Soap gave me a fantastic shave, as usual, and even the blade was up to the task!
The brush, tiny and efficient, was ideal for a small bowl.
An almost perfect shave!
