Razor 1: Yates Precision H High Polished
Razor 2: Yates Precision H Stonewashed
    Blade 1: Astra SP (1)
    Blade 2: Astra SP (1)
Brush: Teton Shave Zen Series "Bob Ross"
    Soap: Lakewood SOCP (1508.5 Project)
    AS 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla 70
    AS 2: Terre D'Hermes Splash
    Fragrance: Terre D'Hermes EdT

So this morning was a 1st comparison of my 2 H plates of the Yates Precision 921 razor. A great drama free shave was had although a rushed one. I think the High Polish has made the Yates a tad more aggressive but it isn't really noticed until the atg pass where extra care and attention to stretching skin around the chin and mouth are needed more. This was with the Astra blade which I find competent but not as sharp as my preferred Wizamet. I need to redo this test at some point soon with the Wizamets and will. The 1508.5 project for the year resumed with the SOCP and I can seen a much lighter area in the center when held up to the light. Doughnut hole is approaching. Topped off with the Humphrey's and Terre D'Hermes combo. Have a great day Folks !!

SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 20, 2021

This morning’s dome shave featured my too long neglected Le Coq Cagehead safety razor. This French Safety razor has a fixed non-adjustable Cagehead, unlike the French Famex and Razvite. It is a very efficient shaver that requires the user’s total attention to the process as I found out this morning. I was listening to the Traveling Wilburys “Handle With Care” during the shave, and should have done so.

The blade feel on this French safety razor is exquisite, and I was really enjoying myself on the second ATG pass of my normal two pass noggin shave when I found myself unconsciously shaving in rhythm to the beat. Not a good practice for shaky old men as I discovered, nicking the top of my left ear and removing a very small piece of epidermis. It required both styptic and direct pressure to stop the bleeding. Pure operator error and a well deserved admonishment from the shave gods put me in my place.

The mug shave was an entirely different story! Simmons Hardware of St. Louis, was founded in 1874 by Edward Simmons. The company's stock consisted of many items, including ammunition, knives, mincers, wires, and even dog collars. They defined its products saying, "If you can't eat it, and it don't pour or fold, it's hardware". Their well-respected ‘Keen Kutter’ brand of straight razor was but one of 800 products under that label.

The Simmons Hardware 4/8 selected for this morning’s mug shave has a German Solingen blade. The original horn scales on this sleek little razor were badly chipped and insect eaten. So they were replaced. The trend in modern straight razor design is toward shave hatchets greater than 8/8. I’ve never shaved with anything wider than 8/8. But what I do know is that this petite 4/8 blade is a delight to shave with and the Solingen steel has really retained the Naniwa 12k/jasper stone edge I put on it. Three buttery smooth passes left me feeling chastened, clean and velveteen smooth!

RAZOR: Simmons Hardware 4/8 (Mug), Le Coq Cagehead (Dome)
    BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
    BRUSH: Rooney Ebony Pure Badger
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Williams Aqua Velva (Spanish Version)

  6. Thanks for the comparison, Dave!

    Blackland Tradere OC
    Gillette 7 O’clock Black
    Omega Evo Synthetic
    Speick Shave Stick
    Myrsol Agua Balsamica Aftershave

Happy Hump Day Everyone. I decided to go with the Speick shave stick today. The Evo lathered the soap with ease. The herbal scent of the soap added to the shave experience this morning. The Tradere OC on auto pilot. delivered a drama free BBS shave in three passes with touch ups. A splash of Agua Balsamica kept the herbal scent going. I hope everyone has a great Wednesday.

  10. Sorry about the noggin nick Jeff. Otherwise, you had fine shaves. A 4/8 straight would be too small for me, but you already knew that.;)

First shave with the polished up New Type SC Gillette.

Awesome lather this morning via the Tabac and the Greydog synthetic. Good thick and slick German goodness. The SC was a very smooth tool with an Astra SP. I went for three passes and oh yeah this razor is definitely a keeper. Finished the shave with a few squirts of Black Tie Gentleman a dupe of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

Hope every one has a wonderful day!
  18. Great shave, Dave! You’ve really been rockin’ the Yates! Boy am I glad my RAD is no longer focused on safety razors! :D
