SOTD SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 7, 2021

First day back in Tennessee with much nicer weather. I brought my seven day set of favorite straight razors. Spending the day with the bride boxing, packing and throwing out 67 marital years of accumulated and duplicated trash. The shave was excellent. My mug shaves look to be spectacular this week. All the dome shaves will be with the SS Supply safety razor. How could today’s shave not be with my favorite Manhattan Cutlery straight razor and SS supply safety razor. I feel clean, refreshed and dolphin smooth!

RAZOR: Manhattan Cutlery 13/16 (Mug), SS Supply V2 (Dome)
    BLADE: Schick Injector Twin Blade
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Hybrid Knot #007
    CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Nancy Boy Signature AS Balm.

Day 6 of 6 of the Dovo Mini-Focus
Fantastic shave this morning with both the software, love the DG Darkfall scent, and the Dovo razor. The Ever-Ready 500 whipped up a nice lather. The only challenge that I have noticed with this soap which I believe is the Icarius base, is that over time it may have harden slightly and spins in the container. (The same phenomenon has occurred with my other Icarius base soap, Lamplight Penance. It is not really an issue for me as I scoop out an almond sized piece of soap to place it in a bowl.
    Have a great day gentlemen.

    Dovo 300
    Gold Dollar W59
Trumpers West Indian Extract of Limes Skin Food & EDT

    Split shave, alternating half sides.

Last shave with my first razor Dovo 300 5/8 half hollow indicated it was needy. I decided to ditch the tape this time and hone on the 3’ radius of the elliptical surface. While it might be debatable that no one can tell the difference in a razor honed to a hollow bevel or honed with therazor spine in contact with the stone vs other methods, the shave feel is now perfect to me. Maybe because I found a crowned surface easier to hone on.

I bought this Gold Dollar because it looked cool. It was obviously honed with the spine off the stone or with tape (much mo tape too). I was taking forever to develop an edge apex on the stones I currently have lapped elliptically convex, so I got the Jarrod lapping plate out and did all my Naniwa Super Stones cause I really don’t use them flat anymore. It still took forever on the 1k grit but it did ‘get her done’ better. I have some more work to round the point a little better, but I wanted to see if I liked how it shaves. I’ve never shaved with a primary grind this heavy (1/4 hollow?), but it shaved very nicely. My preference is full hollow.

Supposed to be some more lapping plates available later this month. Lowerprice too.

Last stone for both razors was a convexed Naniwa 12k. Then to a pasted balsa strop progression ending with .1u CBN and roo.

I like looks and the feel of the Gold Dollar in the hand, but I think the Dovo shaves a little better.

FWIW, these W59 look cool but are a hassle to get shaving. The hone guide is straight while the edge comes with a smile. The width of the spine is hourglass shaped. The original bevel grind angle was more like what you see on knives and at compounded angles. A large amount of metal needed to be taken off. I’ve seen these priced at aroun $130 online. I paid around $20, might be worth $10 IMO

  4. Stunning photo and shave Jim. It is amazing that a razor as mild as the AS-D2 gets the job done but it works.

    Shave Stick & Aftershave

Happy Sunday Everyone. The LEA shave stick was part of the recent Maggard Razor order. This is the new shave stick is labeled as the new formula. The soap would be vegan but for the addition of lanolin. The scent of the soap is a very fresh and clean. The scent is not the same as the soap puck. I do prefer the herbal sandalwood scent of the LEA Classic. I found LEA shave stick easier to lather than the Speick shave stick I used yesterday but that is splitting hairs as both were very easy to lather. Three passes and touch ups ended in another automatic BBS shave. A splash of LEA aftershave and I am ready for the day. I hope everyone as a great Sunday.

  13. That really is a wonderful shave Danny! It may be that some razors mesh with a shaver's skin, beard and overall technique. It sounds like you may keep the razor.

  15. It is rare that you have a not so great shave Joseph. I surmise that the lack of adequate slickness and not your technique was the main cause of your substandard result. I know that you are a super lather, but is it possible that soap needed more water to increase the slickness? You admitted that you haven't used it in awhile and maybe didn't remember that more hydration was needed for this soap to perform well. However, I could be wrong because the soap may not be very good.

  16. Another observation. Feather DE blades have glue dots that seem to dirty up every razor they are used in. However, when I take apart the AD-D2 the glue does not seem to be on the inside of the top or bottom plate. Very strange.
