I recall reading that Shapton uses a different ‘grit ratings’ scale. It is a little confusing. The abrasive particle size on the Suehiro 20k is about 1/2 micron, also about where the Shapton 30k is. That would place both in the same category as the finest grit synthetic stones. After that, further into sub-micron area are pastes, emulsions, and films. I like cBN emulations sprayed on balsa. Expensive and getting more rare to obtain.

I’m probably not going to abandon my use of convexed surfaces. I’m not opposed to flat rocks, I see both as tools and not some idol to worship. One day I might have progressions of both.

My dilemma is, how much do I really want to keep spending in the continual pursuit of ‘the ultimate edge’?

I did not think that particular piece was as bad as others I’d seen.

Either way you have to move the razor around on the rock to accommodate its shape. On ‘bumpy hones’ much less torque, pressure, leaning, swooping, rocking and rolling are required to hit the ‘negative’ areas of the edge. Easier to learn and more tolerant in my opinion.

Lynn Abrams made the only vid I’ve seen effectively illustrating ‘the rolling x-stoke. I’m pretty confident that some of the shave tv personalities parroting the “all you gotta do is a rolling x” in their convex killer schtick have never seen it.

I kinda favor the idea of grinding a bent spine flat although I never do that anymore. On the one piece I actually bought from Lynn, it appears that technique was used. Great shaver and very smooth on delivery. Showcase Queen? Nope.

Razor: Gillette Raised Flat Bottom SE
    Blade: Astra SP (?)
    Brush: Klenzo Boar
Soap: Los Jabones de Joserra Brihuega
    AS 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla 70
    AS 2: Skin Bracer
Fragrance: BVLGARI Man in Black Essence

So I'm pretty sure Mike (Highspeed) sent me this sample and must be multilingual. A little googling found it and this is what is said about this tallow soaps scent:

"Lavender flower nuanced with aromatic notes of rosemary and thyme, the citrus freshness of lemon and bergamot and a background of fragrant tobacco, sweet vanilla and spicy tonka bean."

I have no nose for breaking down scent notes but get the bright fresh citrus but toned down nicely so the don't over power it which must be the other stuff. I enjoyed the scent and so did the wife. The soap base is no doubt a good one but I don't feel adequate to get into that since I was using a bowl to try and load it to the brush to face lather and never can get what I would if loading from a tub/cake of soap. I did get a nice protective and slick enough lather and see this as a very nice soap but at $35 for a tub, it's a pass for me. I do greatly appreciate Mike giving me a chance to give it a try and say "Been there, done that" [IMG] The Gillette RFB Halved............I really need to come up with what to call this thing. Any who, it did a great job as always but almost didn't. 1st few strokes wtg clearing the right cheek felt.............interesting. hen I rinsed it, I checked it out and the half de blade had shifted while changing to the Karve handle. Now what does Fuzzy always say ? I should have checked everything out to ensure it wasn't wonky. Straightened the blade alignment and the shave was gratifying and left me smooth faced for the day. Hitting the road to Lexington today @9. Have a Stupid Fun Day today Everyone !

Well, Bill, you’re on the same journey as most of us. I’ve been quite successful with flat rocks, but I do have one old wavy Reynolds grinder blade I’d love to watch you work your magic on. I’ve been able to get a decent edge, but not necessarily an even one. It doesn’t pass the styrofoam test at all points along the edge. :( Since we’re both vaccinated, when would you like to get together? We could meet at Greene Acres and do breakfast or lunch locally. :)

I’ve seen Glen’s video on the rolling X, but not Lynn’s. They currently are not on good terms with each other. I’ll have to check out Lynn’s. :)

Great shave, Dave! I like the Karve handle on it! Gary (@brit) has a Karve handle he uses with some of his Techs. :)

Thanks Jeff ! I have a ton of extra handles that have accumulated and don't know what to do with them. Sorting them out when I think of it. This is the 3 inch which is okay but a little short for my mitts......

If I didn’t know the supposed grit ratings I would swear the Shapton Glass 16k is a higher grit than the Suehiro 20k. So I would love to try Shapton 30k but that is a very steep price to pay to satisfy my curiosity.

Fantastic shave report Dave. The soap sounds wonderful but I am passing as well. Happy Friday

Happy Friday Everyone. This week has gone by so quickly. The Disco loaded and lathered the Fat with ease. Three passes and touch ups just missed the baby. I did a poor job buffing my lower right neck. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

nice shave! I got to ask, please tell me more about that razor? That’s an awesome mod. Did you post anywhere about that razor, and how you came up with it? Definitely cool!

Yaqi SE AC Excalibur RASB2102 razor.
    Feather Super Pro Blade (2).
MrEE LE #011 brush handle with Dscosmetics synthetic knot.
    Mitchell’s Wool Fat Soap.
    Scottish Antique by Andy Hilfiger.

I had to break out the Fat this morning and I'm glad I did. I loaded a little too much and had a bunch left over so I started to shave my legs....just kidding. :happy102: #011 is a joy to use and will always have a special place in my den.

The Yaqi did an excellent job this morning and is an impressive little razor especially for the price. Three nice drama free passes for another BBS.....smooth as a catfish belly. ;)

A little witch hazel followed by the Scottish Antique and I'm ready for the day.

Take care gentlemen and the weekend is around the corner.

Now, if I could only find some 70 cent t-bones like Dave @Dave in KY I would fire up the grill tonight.
