Of all my vintage razors, I really enjoy shavings with my old Frederick Reynolds ‘faux’ Frameback. Unlike a genuine frameback, these “rattler” grinds followed the traditional wedge grind and predated the hollow grinds we all know and love. Unlike hollow grinds which are done vertically, these old “rattler” grinds were done horizontally. A true frameback has a separate blade fitted into a separate spine. These faux framebacks represent a solid piece of steel. The issue with many of them, mine included, is that it requires some true hone gymnastics to set an even bevel on this wavy blade. Even touch ups take longer than all my other razors, but the shave, is well worth it. It takes a good edge, but like many of the earlier steels will only hold it 10 to 15 shaves before requiring a touch up. The three pass mug shave put the baby to bed, and was followed by a correspondingly excellent two pass noggin shave with my Rex Ambassador that left me refreshed, clean and very smooth.

RAZOR: Frederick Reynolds 5/8 Rattler (Mug), Rex Ambassador
    BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
    BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
    CREAM: Castle Forbes Lime
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Royall Lyme AS/Cologne.
  2. In need for a shave today, I'll try to get to it by this afternoon. Had a good weekend but was a little stressful. Tried returning home after spending time with some friends on Saturday night and ended up in some scary, dangerous weather while trying to get home. All started somewhat fine when I left my friends house, got about a mile out and that is when the weather made a turn for the worse on me. All of a sudden this strong wind came along howling like a train as it rocked my car back and forward also causing a lot of tree debris to go flying and of course the rain and hail was torrential at this point. Considering It was dark by this time and the fog thickness had set in, it pretty much restricted my field of view to maybe a foot even with the bright lights on. My parents told me to pull over but by this point I was unable to determine what was the road side and what was the actual road. Rather than be a sitting duck I decided to return to my Friend's house. Quite honestly I don't know how I made it back. It was like driving into a void of nothingness because it was so hard to see. I really had to avoid Panicking but It was the last thing I needed to do. By the time I made it back to their house that's when the tornado sirens went off.
  3. Thanks Jeff....MWF does its job, but I struggle with it.
