Went with my unbranded razor. Has a good weight to it and is very smooth and sharp. Getting better with my Welsh Slate stones. Used some Stirling Spice soap with my Omega boar brush and a splash of mentholated witch hazel. Thumbs up!

7/8 Herder 49 with an edge from the pool table slate using Smith’s honing oil, a great edge indeed. Soap and AS were Stirling Green and a Keyhole 3 did the lathering honors. No tugging on the chin ATG and a very smooth shaving edge. This hone is really good.

Used the same slate hone from the same source as Steve56 with water and built a sweet, buttery smooth edge on this old Boker. I’ll have to try it with honing oil. Great mug shave! Glen’s named these hones 9 Ball Slates since they originated from the Italian slate of an old billiards table.

RAZOR: Boker & Co. English Cast Steel French Point 5/8 (Mug), Gillette Fatboy (Dome)
    BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: 316L SS Rearden Razor Tuxedo Synth
    SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with L’Occitane Cade AS Balm.

Gelle Frères 7/8 rattler. freshly honed last night and shaved like most good French razors do - top shelf. Soap and balm were ABC hard soap and almond balm. A Keyhole 4 did the lathering.

Another gorgeous razor, Steve! I should stay away from this thread, you, Scott and Tom are very effective, low key enablers! I may look into getting another rattler grind! I love my old Reynolds! Any recommendations for a good rattler brand besides Reynolds?

    Hey Jeff,

Any of the French ones seem good. Here’s a 6/8-ish C. H. Guerre à Langres that’s probably a remanufactured razor according to Bruno of Bruno’s Blades.

The French went through a phase of faux Damascus finish, which I think that this is, but it’s very well done. It does look like Wootz.

How can you test to see if it is real Crucible Steel(Wootz.Steel), or faux??

The razor dates from 1865-ish, so the chance that it is crucible steel (cast steel, acier fondue) is quite good, maybe almost a sure thing. All wootz is a crucible steel but all crucible steel is not wootz. The modern wootz from artisan makers reproducing the process don’t have as nearly a pronounced pattern. And Bruno believes that it is a remanufactured blade because the tang stamp has been worn away in places. He’s a blade smith of course and has made his own Damascus steel and forged wootz from other makers, so it isn’t like he’s inexperienced.

I think that the only way that I know to test it would be to polish off the finish in a spot and see if you could bring it back with the proper etch, but that’s a destructive process, especially if the pattern doesn’t come back

What is curious to me, and you can see it in the image above, is that the pattern is just as clear on the end of the nose as the rest of the razor. Usually they didn’t go to the trouble of making the cosmetic pattern on the end of the nose. I suppose that it is possible that someone had a piece of wootz and had C. H. Guerre make them a razor from it, but that seems unlikely.
