This interview here sheds some light on it:
    https://www.cafleurebon.com/behind-...ale-responsible-restoration-lucky-scent-draw/

It seems Houbigant needed to reformulate, most likely to meet regulations/restrictions that were coming to the perfume world at the time over a decade ago. They turned to a master perfumer (Rodrigo Flores-Roux) to do everything possible to keep it smelling like it originally did. I think they did a great job preserving it. It seems he used techniques of layering certain carefully chosen natural notes to give an impression of ingredients he couldn't use. Coumarin and Oakmoss were the big challenges to replicate using all his learned talents in the craft. He also consulted another master perfumer (Roja Dove) to get a second opinion on his work, which perfumers seem to often do. And Roja Dove is a pretty exceptional and flamboyant perfumer who likes dramatic and natural fragrances. But in this one it seems reserved, with only having moderate flares.

The classic way they approached this one really shows in the outcome. They didn't want to make synthetic garbage. They wanted a classic, old-world perfume. IMO, they got it and it also has a modern, clean refinement to it at the same time without condemning the whole. That's very hard to do. It's necessary to have a clean refinement on it in order for it to sell well in "today's" market. Striking that balance is critical because if you make it too sterile with zero tannins you risk it coming off as synthetic even if it's not. In other words, there has to be at least a little 'dirt/must' on it in order to smell authentic as an 'old' scent. And it has to be highly controlled.

I love the tart fern that comes off with an amazing classy vibe. I honestly don't know what the original Fougere Royale smelled like, but this re-creation smells like a cleaned-up vintage and I like wearing nice professional clothes with it. And if I wear this casually then I tend to want to put on a polo shirt because it's just too damn classy not to try to look classically proper in some way.

The Williams Mug Soap lathered well with Jayaruh #292 Badger Brush. Two passes and touch ups with the King Cobra with a Feather Professional Blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Aqua Velva Sensitive 5 in 1 AS Balm. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

    Thanks bro!

This cream’s skincare is fantastic as well and there’s a little kiss of menthol as well so you get a pleasant cooling effect during and after your shave. In Syria this stuff was selling for next to nothing and it was a staple of barbershops over there. I don’t know if it’s still in production because of the civil war.

    Wednesday morning’s Grand Freeze:

    Stirling Mentholated Pre Shave Soap
    Yaqi 30mm Barber Pole
    Super Speed/Gillette day 8
Master Soap Creations Frosted Lavender SS
    Prep ASB
Master Splash Creations Citrus Melody AS Splash
    Quorum EdT

It’s been a long time since I last enjoyed the Frosted Lavender soap so I decided to pull it out this morning and I’m so happy that I did. The scent is magnificent, the tallow formula gives it such great lather as well as awesome slickness, the menthol sensation is killer cold, and the skincare is perfect. The Prep did a terrific job of moisturizing and soothing my skin while the Citrus Melody aftershave froze me to smithereens and the scent is so lovely, yet it never disrupts any fragrance. I can’t thank Fernando enough for introducing me to his wonderful products - what a delightful BBS shave this was!

    Be well and safe!
