Possum. Who would think that, here in NYC, I have a possum problem.

This morning, when my husband left for work, we discovered animal droppings on our front steps. Upon checking our front-door camera, I found that there was a possum crawling around our steps around 10:30 last night.

So once it warms up a bit, I need to pour some soapy water on the steps to get rid of the waste, and then spray down some pet odor remover & repellent. (We usually use these for stray cats)

Any experience or advice on this problem is welcome!

As long as you maintain your property, that/those possum should be a blessing. They will keep bugs and spiders down as well as keep a lot of other animals away. Also, they will likely go some place more interesting (for possums anyway) once they realize you got nothing for them.

Edit: I didn't mean to insinuate you don't maintain your property. Sometimes possums are gonna roam regardless and they will eventually meander along to greener (for possums, if they even see green?) pastures.

My property is a small urban condo, where I have already found a mess on my front steps. On a larger plot, they might be of benefit, but here, they are a nuisance at best.

I can tell you from experience they love birdseed and corn...

We use to keep a bird feeder on our back patio picnic table. One day my wife was taking the trash out to the garbage can and she came back real quick claiming there was a real ugly cat or something on our patio. :scared007:

I've caught more than a few. Get a medium size trap (Havahart is one common brand) and bait it with a few apple slices. If you have a pickup truck it's easy to take them for a ride to their new home. Otherwise you'll want to protect the interior of your vehicle and cover the trap with an old towel.

Funny, the only thing I have seen in the city were rats. I would welcome an possum.

We have an occasional opossum problem here in Lakeland, but the bigger problem are the armadillos! Those jokers like to tunnel under the AC units, they make a big mess doing it too. I suppose they are trying to get out of the sun, but they may be chasing food too.

Los Angeles. Three raccoons, four squirrels, 8 coyotes, a skunk, and a possum. That's just the regulars
    Sorry, what was your question?

It's still "How do I get the possum off my property?"

Have a heart trap baited with a peanut butter sandwich. They like peanut butter.

In my experience they don't stick around very long.

Groundhogs on the other hand are destructive and burrow.

I'd like to tell you that the entire Shave Den bunch was waiting for you to do just that, but I don't have evidence to back me up.

I don't know the process for NYC but down here in my city in Mississippi, we call animal control and they come out and set up traps to catch them and haul them off.

    1. buy trap
    2. bait trap
    3. take trapped opossum for a long ride to a new home

extra tip - if you don't have an open pickup truck then protect the interior of your vehicle with a tarp or old blankets/towels, etc. in case the rodent goes potty during the ride
