According to a resource on the Shave Nook site, “the Durham Safety Razor Co. was founded in New York, N.Y. c. 1908 by Thomas C. Durham. The trademark name was first published May 18, 1908 and was probably first used in February 1, 1908. The first Durham Duplex U.S. patents were filed in October 1906, and January and March 1907. The inventors listed on these patents included Durham, Sidney I. Prescott, and Thomas C. Sheehan. In 1917 Durham-Duplex claimed five million razors in use and in 1920 advertised eight million satisfied users.” Because of this success. these razors are relatively easy to find. The basic Durham razor was a ‘barber type’ folding straight razor with a removable comb guard, a double-edge rigid replaceable blade, and a celluloid imitation ivory (‘Parisian Ivory’) handle.”

I purchased an estate lot a few weeks ago that included two Weck Sextoblades, a Burmax Aristocrat, and this Durham Duplex ‘safety razor’. Apparently many use carpet cutting blades in this razor. Not surprisingly the reports of pulling, tugging and rough shaves with the Durham Duplex using such blades make sense, not unlike uninformed new wet shavers using Gem paint scraper blades in their Gem blade holders. After a bit of research, I discovered that UK packaged Ever Ready hair shaper blades fit the razor perfectly, and after using it this morning understand why it was so popular when first released in the beginning of the twentieth century.

My mug shave was effortless and automatic. Remember this razor was released back when most men used straight razors. The design was such that it was almost impossible to nick oneself with one. The sales message was that it shaved like a straight razor without the hazards associated with straight shaving. In fact my two and a half pass mug shave was an effortless DFS. Not as close as my straight shaves, but more than acceptably close. I decided to try it on my dome, and ended up with a very close comfortable two pass ATG shave with no red fluid issues. This little razor balances nicely in the hand and delivers an excellent shave, not quite in the velveteen category, but more than acceptably close for most shavers. This little beauty is a keeper!

BLADE: Ever Ready Compact Hair Trimmer Blade
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 with 26mm Boar Knot Ferrule
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Pre de Provence Bergamot & Thyme AS Balm.

Razor: Gillette Slim H1 adj- Mfg 1962 1st qtr, great adjustable razor, great design & well made for its time. Great shaves on setting 7>. 1st razor I owned, bought it a garage sale for $20 Can over 4 years ago.
Blade: Gillette Nacet (5) excellent blade, Sharp & smooth with great longevity and affordable for most folks.
Soap: Cyril R Salter Indian Sandalwood, nice mid range scent with excellent lather qualities.(misted)
Brush: Yaqi Atlantis 24mm synthetic, excellent lather generator, cloud like soft tips, nice scrubber + great lather painter.
Pre shave: wash whole face with CeraVe hand bar cleanser + a dollop of clear Aloe Vera gel on the cleaned beard area.
Prep: Cold water rinse after each pass of 2 + pickups.
Post shave: Proraso red sandalwood with witch hazel + a dollop of CeraVe moisturizer lotion (Balm) + scentless.
Results: CCS,DFS,BBS + no irritation + no weepers = excellent shave with my Gillette slim with a Gillette Nacet.

Thanks Paul. This set is great. Holy Black just nailed it theme and all. I really enjoy the scent. It is simple, but works well and is refreshing.

Cold water face wash with brush squeezing's, Cold Water Face Rinse. /Homemade (~Autumn/Winter mix~) peppermint lavender, eucalyptus, + Tea Tree essential Oils Mixed Together With 200ml of Care+Witch Hazel./Gummy Traditional Turkish Lavender Cologne./Morrisons Aloe Moisture Lotion.
