OK, here's the skinny on this one.....cleaned it up, popped in a new Gillette platinum blade, lathered up w/ some Taylor of Olde Bond Street tobacco & would have to say----- disappointed over-all. It looks cool and as an antique/heirloom glad to have it however it will be at the bottom of the rotation.
Show the part that you're not showing. The handle is a 1920's style handle, but some razors from the early 1930's also use that same handle. Show the bottom of the top cap where the screw is and show the top of the base plate, where the blade sits. and an end view of the razor head.
It looks like a new, but the base plate is on upside down in one of the pics. I get that it might not be your favorite now or ever, but it can be a fantastic razor. I love mine. If you aren't really enjoying the shave, don't use it for a while. Revisit it down the road. Tastes change. Before you get rid of it, give it a 30 day challenge. It takes some time to learn a razor and get the best out of it.
I didn't notice that before, but I think the base plate is upside down in all of the pictures which show it.
You're correct. That's how it was shipped, and like an {idiot} I put it back that way, what was I thinking ?????????????? This changes everything. Thanks guys
Yes, it is that. A 1920's old type. I wrote goodwill because I was about to post an image of a goodwill, but the file size was too large and I neglected to erase the text before continuing.
Lets try that again. This is a Gillette Goodwill razor. It's a type from 1931, which uses a 1920's style handle.
So the general consensus is late 20's early 30's "New" ? The handle knob is what throws me. Assembling it wrong and shaving that way w/ it is the dumbest thing I've done all day (but the evening is young!!!)
Thats an Old Type. I could not see the pics enough and thought it was a short comb new with the baseplate on upside down. With the second set of pics, it is an Old Type. Here's an image showing gillette base plates https://i.imgur.com/NYKu8DG.jpg
It's definitely a 1920's old type. I edited and corrected my post where I said it was something else. I posted a picture of a goodwill razor as an example of a 1930's razor which used a 1920' s handle, to show the necessity of seeing the details of the head for proper identification. but you definitely have a 1920's Old Type Gillette. "Old Type" is really the name of it.
i know oddly enough..sought after case i hear...the black/gold liner is perfect in mine, even snaps shut like it should but the leatherette outer coveriing is dy and cracked.mine is also light red/brown ,different than most i have researched and seen.
hmmmm.....doesn't the term "rotation" come from the root "rotate"? And to rotate is to go around as in a circle. And isn't a circle without beginning or end, thus having no top or bottom? And if it can be considered to be at the bottom of the rotation at any given time, it will soon rotate to the top of the rotation, will it not? Thus, if in a true rotation, it cannot be placed "at the bottom of the rotation" with an expectation to remain there. to philosophical for this early in the morning?
