SOTD WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 4, 2022
This morning’s mug shave featured the Saito SK3, one of my favorite Japanese straight razors. The full hollow grind on this smiling blade really belted out the “Buttering Toast” song during my three pass shave this morning. This little Saito straight is just a great shaver. My son, Ben has the full series - SK1, SK2 and SK3, all NOS - as part of his huge Japanese straight collection. Unfortunately, they are display queens, which seems criminal to me. This razor was supposedly just a user, but he never shaved with it. He gave it to me for my birthday a few years ago. I certainly enjoy using it!
Although I’ve shaved my head with a straight, the arthritis in my shoulders and arms make doing the back of my dome painful and problematic. Because of this issue, I use a safety razor, and learned quite some time ago that two ATG passes clears the stubble right down to the scalp line. If given my druthers, I’ll always take an SE over a DE, despite getting good noggin shaves with both. Before my Shake Sharps and my Speed Razor/Shavers, my absolute favorite vintage SE was my Schick E Type, and this morning’s noggin shave reminded me why! Just a remarkable two pass shave leaving me porcelain smooth from noggin to neck.
