Well, at least this is clear as mud. So, what is the approx age of the "El Fauno" Filly 14's, that have been shown??
I think that their best looking scales are like the ones that you have on the Capote with the metal lyre embedded in the plastic scales.
On the topic of Rebranded ... I got this Matador on ebay in 2018 in a lot of three razors along with a Crown And Sword and a Champion Wedge for $20.50 + $8.99 shipping. WorthPoint shows a similar razor as being a Filarmonica. I recall having seen another one there with enough detail on the blade face for a positive identification. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-filarmonica-12-matador-140117154 It appears to me to be a size 12.
It was good for a while, but I don't rehone a razor unless I super like it. I have too many other razors waiting to get into the rotation. Here's the measurements on it: Fili Matador 12 spine 4.43 mm side 16.21 mm 15.7 degrees
Filarmonica 14 Doble Temple 1 inch at the widest 15/16 at the narrowest. I picked this one up, for a steal, from Morocco. I talked him down, to $40. But, it will require some work. These are some very cheap scales. I don't think I will even try to use the good side, even though it is straight.
I know of no connection other than both Filarmonica and Carl Monkhouse (C-MON) razors were also sold under the "Peter J. Michaels" import mark/barber supply. Just about everything sold by PJM was high quality. PJM also later purchased the rights to the C-MON name, and used it on various items not made by C. Monkhouse, scissors and stuff. I suppose there could be a Filarmonica razor with both PJM and C-MON branding on it, but I've only seen PJM branding on them.
Ryan, I own a C-Mon/ P J Michels straight and it is a marvelous razor. I did not know that Filarmonica allowed P J Michael put his imprimatur on their razors because I have never seen one.
Here’s another, a barber supply company on the show side tang, and the usual Filarmonica Jose Monserrat Pou on the other. I believe the company might still be in business but I doubt that you can buy Filarmonica razors there.
I think that I can make the case that that is an Especial and that the Imperial is a distinct model from the Especial. The Especial stands apart from all other models in that it does not have the model name on the tang stamp. But that's not enough. All of the models have distinguishing blade face decorations if you can find them in good enough shape. I found a picture of that razor with the classic musical Especial Filarmonica blade face. I think both models may have been shipped in the same type box. I also found (I just don't remember where for either of these pictures) a picture of an Imperial with the name on the tang stamp and also distinguishing Imperial blade face decoration. The end.
It has the markings, I think, of the earliest version of the Doble Temple. It has the JMP, and a very large 14, and plain scales. I have a couple of old DTs with the very large 14 and plain scales but the etching and the gold wash is gone. I have a couple of DTs with JMP in the gold wash on the blade face but the 14 isn't quite as big and the scales are fancier.
Good summary of the Montserrat family industrial history. With lots of nice pics and all the details. https://sincortenohaygloria.com/t/historia-grafica-de-las-navajas-montserrat/78105?u=ischiapp
Here are my three remaining Filarmonicas, 2 Doble Temple 14's and 1 Sub Cero 14. A few years ago I sold an Especial Para Barbas Duras 14 with black rubber wrap around the tang, an excellent razor I wish I had kept. I also sold a NOS Medallion 13 to another member for a third of the price I paid to Japanese eBayer, because I could not get shave ready edge. It was the last generation when the company was run by the daughter and they might have used Pakistani steel. The member was able to get a decent bevel somehow. I also sold my Iberia 14. I have seen only 1 or 2 others online before. I wish I had kept that one as well. Superb razor. Iberia was made by Bassat S A company, also in Barcelona and started in 1930's, not a Filarmonica.
