    International Harvester red is the correct color for the tip. That's usually all that's wrong with them after a bit of scrubbing bubbles.

    Thanks to @Enrico's timely pointing out of an eBay item, I'm a bit poorer, but have another interesting contraption on the way to my house.

    I usually scuff the surface lightly when removing the old paint. Spray some self etching primer, bake in a toaster oven, then apply the red, and bake again. And protect it with a clear coat that's used for plastic modeling. Adds a better layer of protection.
