For those waiting for the New Red, I've found that Ingram is a good substitute. It's easy to lather, has a nice clean scent (not quite like PRed, but within the same genre), has lanolin and it's got a bit of menthol. Good stuff.
Yeah, that's the only thing, too bad. But it is a good cream, and it'll do a good job in the mean time. They're very similar in performance. But you're right, the wheat germ and wheat protein made PRed unique.
Ingram's is excellent but the icy blast it provides isn't in the same genre, in my opinion, as Proraso Red. We're talking about a cream that has no menthol vs. one that has far more menthol that regular Proraso. The PR is a very mild, soothing sort of cream. It's sort of like comparing white wine to straight gin.
Proraso Red has Menthol in it, and it certainly can be felt. See post 33 for the list of ingredients. And although it is true that Ingram is more cooling than P-Red, I definitely don't think is more cooling than P-Green. Not only does P-Green have a healthy amount Menthol, it also has Eucalyptus oil, which has a cooling effect as well. Is a double whammy right there. Sorry, your wine/gin analogy doesn't work.
Mea culpa, it does have menthol. I didn't even notice it in daily use, however. Strange how perceptions differ. The Ingram has so much it bothered me at first. In any case, I agree with you that both are very good products.
The red doesn't have the Eucalyptus (causes the great cooling effect of the green). It is said to be more sensitive/forgiving of people with sensitive skin. It is great! Wishoot: You'd be crazy not to buy up all of the tubes you can. Guarantee you could sell all of them here in a matte of minutes!
About the SLS. SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) is a commercial detergent chemical. It helps produce lather in just about anything, and this is why you see it everywhere in most cleaning products like liquid body wash and toothpaste. The reason most commercial manufactures use this stuff is that it's cheap and provides stable lather in just about anything, so they can make a cheaper mix of soaps that wouldn't lather as well as the expensive stuff if it weren't for the SLS. Removing it might affect the lathering properties of the cream, but if it's a good mix to start with, it might not affect it at all. Proraso probably used it for the above reasons. SLS has a lot of bad rep online, and none of it is deserved. One small trial found it to promote regrowth of canker sores in the mouth cavity, but no-one has been able to reproduce the results from that trial. No other evidence of it doing anything besides making lather has been found. And due to the fact that most humans are exposed to SLS daily (but in small doses at a time), we would probably have seen the bad effects of it by now. One theory about the study that "proved" SLS to be bad is that they used a high concentration solution for the test, ten or 100 times higher than what you would encounter in toothpaste or soap, which then would give an unnatural result. Also note that I don't think you should start using SLS if you don't need it in your soap, but if you find a good product that contains it, you shouldn't run away either. It would be interesting though to add SLS in an existing high-end soap or cream and see what it does, like how the super-lather guys add glycerin to their soap/cream mix. Now I've totally geeked out again, this is what happens when I don't see my girlfriend often enough.
Weird, I haven't found any online reference to that, but if it's an allergic reaction it wouldn't be listed under side-effects since humans can be allergic to just about anything. I myself have some problems with scalp sores from time to time, I need to check this out and see if it helps switching to an SLS-free shampoo. It's also very likely that the scalp is so sensitive that problems with SLS just manifests there... Interesting nevertheless. BTW, don't take my SLS-propaganda the wrong way, I personally like the idea of as few "unnecessary" chemicals as possible in all products, I just don't like the "SLS is just bad, we don't need reasons"-argument that is floating around the internet... Oh, and I forgot to add this in my last post, I would be very interested in sampling/buying your cream when it comes available, the idea of reintroducing a good product through reverse engineering makes my spine tingle...
OK, so I finally got the time to read this whole thread. JoAnna is working on a TSD version of Pro Red!!! Wow, if it gets close enough that could be a huge seller! I love my Pro Red and have wondered what I'd do once it is gone. Awesomeness!
