Free? That's certainly asking a lot. :D One way is stop as many of the little memory pig programs that load up when you start windows. They are usually the ones that sit in your tray on the right hand side.

I am pretty good at doing those tasks....

What I am looking for is a free registry cleaner and any other
    "special" items that may help.

I have to come in here with the obligitory geek reply.

    Use Linux!

    Free
    No virus problem
    No Spyware problem
As little or as much bloat as you want.
    No need to defragment.

I hesitate to download programs like this because they have a huge potential to have malware or viruses embedded in them. I would go to CNET Download and see what they have for Shareware/Freeware.

AdAware for spyware. AVG for viruses.

For self-defense, a copy of HijackThis. If you suspect your computer is pooched from Internet script monsters, you can run this and get a log file and post it to some forum where someone can tell you why your computer is pooched and (hopefully) how to fix it.

I use Windows Defender and AVG. Unless you have some home networking setup Windows firewall causes issues with, keep that on as well.
