  5. Thanks Joe. I like the scent fades pretty quickly since I really don't want to smell it all day, unless it is Bay Rum. I do, however, want to use it all up before the weather turns cold so I can go with warmer scents.

  10. September 12 SOTA

    Good afternoon.

    Assured for Men/Dollar Tree DE Razor
    Assured for Men/Dollar Tree DE Blade (2,3)
    Barbury Synthetic Brush
    Cella SS
    Aqua Velva Ice Blue AS
    Stirling Alum Block
    Modessa Witch Hazel
    Beard Growth: 24.5 hrs
    Dome Turf: 3 days

    I decided to do a headshave and a face shave with my $1.29 special.
    Admittedly, the razor is aggressive and the proprietary blade is sharp, but not super smooth. Therefore, a shallow angle and a light touch is warranted.
    I was inspired by @palmolive fox Barry's morning shave to pick out my Cella. Unfortunately, the scent is gone, but the performance is still great. Here's my lather:

    Did 2.5 passes on my face and 3 on my dome for a BBS shave. Did get a very minor scratch on my crown and another on my left temple. Hit both of them with cold water and then the alum and they vanished without a trace. Felt the alum on various areas on my neck and dome , but nothing too intense. Splashed on the witch hazel and the Aqua Velva Ice Blue to soothe my skin. My assessment on the face was an A and on my dome an A-. Take care

  14. I've never used alum. What is it?

    I used to use a styptic pencil but haven't had one for a couple of years. Really haven't needed it for a couple of years either. The only nicks I seemed to get were on my scalp when shower shaving with a disposable razor. Now that I'm back to DE scalp shaves, no problems at all.

  15. Alum is usually made out of potassium aluminum sulfate. The styptic pencil is made of potassium aluminum sulfate that is combined with a wax binder to maintain its shape. Therefore, a styptic pencil and an alum block is essentially the same thing, but the styptic pencil is more concentrated. The pencil seals the wounds much more quickly, but leaves a white spot that needs to be rinsed off. The alum doesn't leave any traces. It really is a matter of preference to go for the pencil or the block. As an aside, the alum block is a great anti-perspirant. If you are going to use it that way, then don't use that block for sealing wounds. Use a fresh block to seal wounds.

  16. Good point about the economy of this Joe, a planned one passer might be on the cards in the future...

    Thank you Joe, me too, same two scoops, same brush and bowl and lathering technique. Still useable though

    Thanks Joe, interesting how the scent reappeared during the day

    Thank you Gary.

  17. 13 Sep 2023 (Sterling, Single Edge)

    26 hours

    Prep = Cold Water Prep and Shave, Proraso Pre shave
    Soap / Cream = Stirling Barber Shop Sample one scoop into the bowl
    Brush = Omega Pura Setola 11137 was chosen for the hard soap
    Bowl = Timeless
    Razor = SE Eversharp Hydromagic black handle L-1
    Blade = Personna Injector PTFE (day 3)
    Passes = 3, with intra-pass touch ups
    Technique = still lacking in the difficult zone 8. Sticking with a very light touch with the SE and avoiding any sideways movement between strokes
    Post = CWR, Alum, rinse, Thayers, Nivea, Stirling Bay Rum
    Scent = Guerlain Pour Homme
    Damage = minimal weeper: enter stage right for a brief top lip appearance during pass 2, dissipated spontaneously

    Score = 9 / 10. Super smooth left side of face

    Comments = wouldn’t normally consider a SE for a 24 hours shave, but knowing the protection of of Stirling soap I thought I would stay the course for another day. Managed to clear the chin cleft better this time around. Heavy thunder and storms descended during the shave, happy to have maintained my focus and concentration throughout the shave. Aiming to use less ASB in general but because of the very close SE shave and the impending Bay Rum I included the Nivea anyway Lol!

    Great start to a still stormy blustery thundering day

  19. Hi All. I’ve had two shaves now with a new razor. It’s called the Shield Stomper, which honestly is a ridiculous name for a razor. Henceforth, until we change my mind it shall be known as George. George is a half DESE razor made from titanium. It came with a box of Derby saloon blades. Can anyone tell me where the reference to saloon comes from? Shave one was with a Derby, shave 2 was with my favorite blade, a Personna Platinum Chrome. I will reserve commentary until I’ve had a week’s worth of shaves with it.
