Speick Cream

I'd like to hear the boards opinion on this cream. I shaved a sample that Shawn sent me the other day. It smelled and lathered nicely. Had that fresh, woodsy Speick scent. The lather seemed thick and dense; didn't dissipate in the bowl. All good so far. I struggled with the shave however. It was no where near slick enough for me. Ordinarily I would shave a product at least three times before passing judgment, but I only had enough for one shave.

As a result I experimented with water between passes. Started out w/ low water and added more and more between each pass. I did a four-pass + touch up shave. All the way through I did not get the slickness desired for a smooth shave. I used a razor and blade combo that works well for me so I'd say this is a cream/water issue. The end result was a semi-decent shave with some stubble and rough areas left over. Face and chin were a bit raw afterwards too as a result of trying in vain to clear the rough patches.

I'm not inclined to purchase a full tube based on these limited results. However I don't want to discount it out of hand just yet either. Just wondering what others have experienced with this product and how we feel about it?

I have my original tube for a reason. I am going to shave with this tomorrow but I believe as well the this is not a superb cream. I believe the stick has much better qualities than the cream. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone wanted just a couple creams or push on a newbie. I bought it because of all the hype and of course never lived up to its expectations. Of course.....certain people can rave about any cream and they will be the next best thing since slice bread? The reviews of this cream seem to be consistently great! I will shave with again in the morning with a tried and true shaver/blade combo and will post again but dont think it will get much better. Of course there is no rule that says a company that has such a nice AS splash needs to supply a superb quality SC. But as Burnwood would say ....YMMV. I will say that at least I enjoy the scent!

Your first impression is quite opposite of my experience with Speick.

Right off the bat, it reads to me like you used too much cream for a single shave. The fact that it never got slick, and you had raw areas, seem to indicate that to me.

Interesting observation, but I don't think so. The sample container was quite small. If anything a tad less than I might normally scoop out. Anyway this is what I wanted to know. Who has luck with it and who doesn't. Hopefully a few more will chime in and a consensus will form. Water type also has a lot to do w/ performance. Several popular creams do not work so well for me, and I'm pretty convinced it's the high mineral content water we have here in the Valley.

Well I have just got using Speick again and really did get a good BBS shave. Face was still a bit tender from yesterday but still no re-occuring weepers. Its hard to guage on how well it moisturizes since I use a splash/balm combo and is my moisturizer. I used a little bit....about the size of an almond and got plenty of good smelling lather. Are there better and are there worse? Of course. I would put it in the upper-middle class. Good stuff and will need to re visit more often:)

IMHO Speick is a fair shave cream. I prefer the soap (stick).

    Same here.

I originally got the soap in a trade and immediately fell in love with the scent; nice and spicy. I milled it into a bowl and it's currently one of my favorite soaps. I picked up the cream a couple weeks ago wasn't as impressed as I had anticipated, sadly. Its not bad, but its not as good as the soap IMHO. The lather was not as slick or as dense, even after a few shaves with the cream, it was still lacking. The scent is also a bit more subdued. I'll use the cream as a superlather with the soap, but I won't buy it again when I run out. The soap on the otherhand... when I run out I'll buy four more sticks :D

+1 - that sums it up nicely. Both products are very high up on my list of personal favorites.

I originally tried the cream and was a bit turned off. Luckily I decided to give Speick another chance and bought the shave stick!

The stick is miles and miles ahead of the cream. Wonderful soap, and dirt cheap, with an incredible scent.

Klaus, I cannot understand why Canada stopped to sell the Speick stuff--it is so good. Daddy brought me a couple of sticks and a cream when he and mom were up here last month. I remember in Israel, I used to see Speick cream in a lot of the pharmacies, and it wasn't so expensive. Here, it was wasn't cheap, but I still bought it.

I got a sample of the cream from John @ shavingessentials.net once upon a time and I really liked it. I had three nice shaves with it.

I wish I could find a supplier for it.... I'd be happy to stock it and sell it.

Speick and Tabac are 2 of my favorite low cost creams. I have had great success building lather with both of them.

I really like the Speick cream. I love the way it leaves my skin - and at that price...fuggedaboudit. :D

Very interesting remark. I'd put Tabac and Speick in the mid-price section as Tabac costs 4€ whereas cheap yet decent creams (Palmolive, Wilkinson, Rilanja...) can be had for 0,75 - 1€.

Big fan of the cream and the AS. I actually prefer the cream to the stick. Both provide an excellent lather however. The AS is superbly herbal and great for cooling the skin.
