I am reminded of a question asked by a student of mine. I was explaining that there is an element of randomness in which sperm & egg meet up at fertilization. His query,” So are you saying I’m just the lucky swimmer that got there first?”
Actually, he was a pretty nice kid. He was just caught by surprise at that revelation. Seeing surprise like that on kids was actually one of the rewarding aspects of teaching.
