My last shave was almost a month ago. I now have a full beard and moustache set. I decided today that it was time for a trim - get rid of the neckbeard part and clean up the middle of the cheeks to leave a crisply defined jaw outline.
I went with some of my favourites: a brush with a beautiful wood handle turned by Jason
@jtspartan paired with an excellent badger knot, my pet modern injector which combines solid mass with a nearly foolproof plate of mid-grade aggressiveness, and a very very slick and protective Stirling mutton tallow (and lanolin) soap. They were a great combo!
Due to the length and density of the whiskers I had to remove, I shaved in two stages: first the neck and then the more minor cleanup on the cheeks.
The neck took about four passes to go from beard to DFS with re-lathering after each pass and reloading the brush from the puck at least once. The first pass was ATG to get rid of the bulk of the whiskers. The second pass was WTG to catch the remaining visible clumps of whiskers. The third was diagonally XTG and then the fourth and final pass was ATG again to get to near BBS.
It was a very slow process, because for the first pass I couldn't just rinse the cut whiskers out of the razor; instead I had to unscrew the plate and remove the blade to unclog the razor - after every single stroke. I had to do the same thing twice during the second pass. For the last two passes, I was back to my normal practice of just rinsing the razor clean under the tap every few strokes.
I then did the cheeks which were much easier because I was just trimming down the sparser uneven upper edges of my beard area. Three passes did that: XTG , the WTG, then XTG again. No need to disassemble the razor to unclog it.
No nicks, blood spots or razorburn and the alum was totally silent. Honestly that surprised me on the neck after the two ATG passes there.
The splash was a good finish. The Scots Pine has a pleasant fir forest scent that goes well with winter weather.
Hope everyone is keeping well.
