These two razors are some of my best shaving modern non vintage safety razors. They are the Timeless Titanium & the Stainless .68 blade gap OC razors. For me after lightning up both of these razors from there factory configurations made them perfect shavers for me and changed there shave characteristics a little. I did this by adding a lighter and shorter handle to both razor heads.(The Razo Rock S/S thin bar handles at 40g in weight and 76mm in length 10mm diameter did the job perfectly for me). Both of these razors are very smooth and very efficient shavers. The Titanium razor now weighs 64g & the Stainless razor weighs in at 82g a little heavier around the weight of a Fat Boy. ** So what's your guys best shaving modern Safety Razor?? Happy Shaves Everyone, Bill G
they are very nice looking razors.here's my 2 cents,i have bought and sold a couple of ss razors,(razo-rock mamba, and a fendrihan offering),along with a couple of different ss handles, gave them all away to friends.while they shaved well, they could never replace the "original" gillettes i both love and enjoy.i totally respect anyone who uses ss modern DE razors, but in my mind they are well made modified versions of the original.anyone who uses modern DE razors gets the benefit of 120+ years of R and D..i woild still like to try a Colonial Razor's Silversmith, but unlikely to spend the $$ they are worth today..that said,i ponder on the gamechanger and karve sites a bit still but back out in the end .i have invested a lot into my gillette collection and don't want to sideline it..in for a penny as they say.
I totally get the vintage Gillette razors as I have quite a collection of them myself and love the way they shave. I also believe there are some great modern safety razors on the market. The key thing is enjoying the whet shaving experience and getting great shaves. I find that I am able to do this with my vintage Gillette collection of razors & my Schick 274 Krona razors as well as a few modern DE razors such as the Timeless razors above that I also enjoy. The Razo Rock Game Changer is a nice razor and darn hard to beat for the money. I have and use the .76 plate on my Game Changer and it’s a fine shaver. * I would use any DE razor vintage old Gillette or newer model DE over any modern cartridge razor…Lol Happy Shaves, Bill G
I don’t have a lot of modern razors but I can give high marks to the Merkur Futur and the Parker Variant.
The Blackland Blackbird is hands down the best modern razor I've used, probably because it isn't a 'one size fits all' razor. Most other modern razors are retreads of old designs in a revamped package, imo.
We're almost on the same page here. For me, the Blackland Era is tops, followed by the Blackbird Lite. Hot on Blackland's heels come the Yates and the Karve CB.
Depends where vintage starts. Assuming made 2000 or later, the only 4 I still have are 2 Merkur Progess razors, one pre 2016 ish or whenever they changed the die heads used to make them and one after that should be same as the ones they still make. The other 2 are a Rex Ambassador and a Heritage Gibbs replica.
it just presents the blade at an efficient angle/gap/exposure.weight,exposure,angle all make a difference but a blade is a blade, coatings also determine sharpness and durabilty.
just purchased a razo-rock gamechanger .84 p .used it 3 times so far.absolutely awesome razor, fit and finish top shelf imo.it replicates a brit red tip shavewise.so it's just a stainless steel 3 piece copy of a 1950s vintage design gillette course beard razor.
I like slants, open comb, and the rarer open comb slant. My holy grail search is for an open comb slant thats adjustable via a dial and I haven't found one like that anywhere so far. I just bought 2 razors from Italian Barber, razor rock super slant L1++open comb and the L2++open comb. These are nice razors albeit a bit on the pricy side at 140 each. i also have the blue open comb monster slant from Paa which was about 30 bucks and even though its quite light and made of plastic, it shaves very well for me and I like it very much. Paa claims its a ‘twist’ adjustable by loosening the handle and this does seem to work somewhat but its not adjustable via a dial and therefore my search for the grail continues. I also have Paa’s double open comb ascension razor which isn’t a slant but I like it. I also bought the Torqx from aliexpress which is an adjustable slant thats closed comb and is fun to use. But my all time favorites, which gives me the best consistently close to bbs shave with very little to no irritation, are my fatip open comb slants lo storto and picolli, in gold. I love these 2 razors and they were only 40 each!
For me, the modern razor that is hard to beat, and that I keep coming back to, is the Rockwell 6s. The weight helps me use less pressure, and it just performs and I can use it without taking any special care. Having said that, I also love the Merkur Futur, though it requires much more attention to detail. I have used many vintage razors, too, including an Aristocrat that is similar to the one my Dad used for decades (my sister pitched his after he passed, thinking no one would want a used razor).
Merkur 34. I have two Cs and a G. Paired with an Astra SP, darn near perfection every time, sometimes even hitting perfection!
Oh, I agree. It's aggressive, and has a narrow angle it works at. Definitely not a razor with built in training wheels like a Henson, or as forgiving as most other modern razors.
i am considering trying the Razo- rock Gamechanger 1.05 baseplate. The rr gc .84p razor is excellent so far, very brit red tip like shave wise.i am really impressed considering the $75 canadian price point, far less than many stainless steel razor offerings. rr gc .84p
To follow up the one I personally like best is older Merkur Progress, it is old school aggressive. With that said I can see most people not liking this razor if they've only used modern stuff. I've shaved with alot of SE and aggressive razors through the years so my facial skin tends to be more tolerant of aggressive razors and super sharp blades. If one isn't then the current production Merkur Progress would be the next choice. Those are much less aggressive but still get the job done as long as you aren't chasing a daily baby.
i really like the ss thin bar handle.very grippy, nice balance with the gamechanger.(and new deluxe)i do find the other rr handles too long and a bit bulky.but i am just used to gillette 3 inch handles.
RigaRazor Made in Latvia 15/16th 1/4 Hollow Since this is a modern design Straight Razor, from a new company, and it was made only 2 years ago, it is a "Modern Razor". Very well made, and very efficient. Never needs a refill, and if taken care of, it will still be shaving in another 100 years.
