Beard growth....or lack thereof

After just taking a bit of a shave hiatus during vacation I've come to the conclusion that I will never be able to grow a decent beard or mustache. Most of my working life has consisted of jobs that require a clean shave so I rarely get a chance to sprout anything out. On those occasions when I have had a couple days or weeks I never get more than a scruffy, extended stubble look. Frankly it just looks nasty; like some kind of wino on a three day bender. A mustache you ask? Forget it. That hair grows in even slower and thinner. If I was to let it go for a few months I might achieve the same results as a 14 year old.

Being a fairly educated laymen I assume this has to do with the gene pool and bloodline. There seems to be a contradiction there too however. My dad has a fairly nice, if fine, beard and mustache. Neither of my grandfathers wore a beard so I can't say. I always heard male pattern baldness is a trait passed on from the maternal grandfather so maybe this offers a clue, though I do remember my mom's dad shaving daily which I do not. Besides my head hair grows in thick and fast. As for bloodline, we discussed that a few months ago. I'm of northern European stock so one would think body hair would be genetically encoded due to colder climes and all that. So why the hell can't I grow a decent beard?!?

Is there a point to all this? Well if any of you scientific, biology types has an answer I'm all ears. Other than that feel free to chime in with your beard type. Are you a Wooly Mammoth or a Smoothy Sam(?)?

I don't think northern european men are all that hairy in general...better luck in the area around the Mediterranean.
Face it - the genes are against you :D

It depends, because myself, I was born in Eastern Poland, or more precisely, Western Ukraine, but raised in Israel. I am swarthy (right word?) of color, from mamma's side of the family, with black, black hair and eyes, and of heavy beard, and hairy body, however: Daddy is not so hairy, and his beard is less thick than mine, and my mamma's daddy was not a very hairy man, but, he had a pretty heavy beard. I have all the supposed stereotype look of the Mediterranean man. Arabs, Iranians, and Armenians always mistake me for being one of them. Many Mediterranean men are not dark, or hairy also. It just depends of your makeup of genetics. My father-in-law, who comes from Morocco, is less than me in hairiness, but we have the same dark skin and hair and eye color. Armand, my brother-in-law, is dark like me, but not too hairy, but his beard is quite heavy, a bit less than mine. All my cousins from mamma's side of the family are dark, but none of the men are very hairy. They all have normal beards, but not heavy, heavy, heavy ones. From daddy's side of the family, they are light-skinned, and some have hairiness of the body, some don't. My grandfather from daddy's side was olive-skinned, with light eyes, and dark hair, but his beard was normal, just like daddy.

Nah, mine grows in thick and heavy. Not as bad as Jeff's, I'm sure, but I can have a George Michael style beard in about a day or two.

My beard grows in thick and heavy, except around my moustache and chin. Naturally, then, it should come as no surprise that my wife wants me to try a gotee.:happy102

    Welcome to the club! :o

I once grew a beard for over a year after I got out of the army. It was an act of rebellion, having had to be shaved every day before :ashamed001
Anyway, it was disgusting. Well, not to me, it was, as it did take me almost a year to realize that I just couldn't grow a good-looking beard with my red, curly facial hair

After a month I can grow a decent looking passable beard. It may start off looking thin and light but fills in nicely with time. I do have an old frostbite patch the size of a $.50 piece on my right cheek that doesn't fill in as quick as the rest of my face. My problem is more in the beard color area. My chin is reddish and there is an odd fade from the red through blonde to the dark brown of my head. I used to use the "just for men" beard color until I developed an allergy to it.

I don't know why I worry about it it's going grey fast anyway! :D

Mine is very similar. Reddish around the chin, not much blond, dark from my sideburns down, and going gray fast! (as is the rest of my hair!)

JayKay 3000 posts and all I got was this lousy title

I'm a wooly mamoth. Its all genetic. It could be some recessive trait past through your mothers blood line or fathers blood line. Dosn't always come up.

It would take me perhaps 10 days to grow a full beard, not longer. When I had a mustache, back in my IDF days, one of my commanders literally mistook me for a Syrian POW I was interrogating!

A good beard would take me about 2 weeks with the texture of #3 course steel wool.

    rick I'll make ya SCream!

My goat is finally at an acceptable stage but my stache has been growing for 8+ years and I have NEVER liked it.
Looks OK short but when I try to grow it out, the whiskers stick straight outta my face and I usually cave in around the 3 week mark and trim it all down again.

The rest of me body ........?
    Well.

Grass dont grow on a playground !! :shocked003

    I think we're related

Without exaggeration or embellishment I can honestly say that if I shave at 8:30 am by 9:00 am I have a 5 O'clock shadow.
