Just dropping in to say Hi. I am going to be buying a Safety Razor soon (it is an economy/environmental choice for me - the heads to my Mach 3 are outrageously expensive, and a pretty bulky hunk of trash considering how fast I go through them). I have been using a brush/soap for awhile now (although the el-cheapo ones from Walgreens), so this seemed like the next logical step. I can see how all the different options may have me with a new brush and soap soon as well... So...hello!
Hi Matt, Welcome to the shave den and to wet shaving. If you can control yourself, you may save money, but wetshaving certainly hasn't saved me any money, with the endless combination of soaps. creams, brushes, razors, aftershaves, it gets overwhelming quickly. If you really want to save money, use the brush you have, get a puck of tabac shave soap, or J M Fraser shave cream if you like creams,(these are in my opinion the best bargains in their respective categories) and get an old tech or superspeed you can find for around 10 dollars used, get a blade sampled pack, and a bottle of witch hazel, and you will be set. Good luck, and ask questions as they come up.
Welcome, Matt. The blades really are the cure for your cartridge spending woes. As much as we joke about how much some of spend on this hobby, you really can spend very little to get a world-class shave. Enjoy!
I can deal with the option to spend more (my main hobby is Coffee - you can have great coffee with a $30 hand grinder and a cup, or with a $4k espresso machine and matching $2k grinder), but cheap is a great starting point! Now to find a brush, razor, and soap for a song
Welcome indeed, Matt! Keep a weather eye out in the Classifieds, you can usually get some great deals there!
Welcome to the shave den. If you want to really be low impact you can get a straight razor and use the same piece of metal for a lifetime if you treat it right. In reality if you are really into shaving one razor would be hard to stick to. I try to conserve resources in all aspects of my life. My weakness, as a consumer, is in the area of shaving. Razors and shaving have become a hobby for me for which I am willing to spend some money. Anything is better than plastic disposable razors, cans of goo and all the packaging that goes with them.
