There were a few other things besides the brush being off by half an inch. Picture on website and in catalog show gold color handle rim not found on actual brush. Confirmed with live person they sell only one model. Handle too narrow for decent grip.Proportion of handle to hair incorrect-too much handle -not enough brush. A narrow dull ring around widest part of handle gave the impression brush spent much time rolling around on an abrasive surface. Perhaps just a fluke but I didnt have a good experience-and they are charging $7.95 return shipping. Will cost me about $19.00 bucks for this learning experience..
That's not right! If it is not as advertised they shouldn't charge return shipping. I would fight that. What is the the other $11.05 for?
MT: Original shipping charge was about $4.50 or so for just the shave cream.Adding the brush brought it to $11.50.They charge based on total purchase not weight of items.Im not impressed with quality at J. Peterman but YMMV.Shave cream looks great.Nice heavy tub.
My opinion is also evolving. I was told in response to my concerns that the "woody" was actual wood and not plastic. I think I can tell the difference. That was the first thing that struck me as I opened the box, "hey wait this ain't wood!" Since when does wood melt? I still love the cream! It may actually be my desert island cream now, behind Proraso red.
My concerns were addressed and the spray cologne I'm exchanging the woody for is already on it's way without a return charge. Now that's good service! Count me as Impressed. I may look into some clothing now. Those Baseball shirts are really cool.
Chris, How fake does the wood look? I bought that instead of the spray because the price differential (during the sale) wasn't really all that bad. When you opted to exchange it, what did they say? I may do that. Thanks,
John, It looked very fake to me. The wood grain in the bevels at the top of the bottle and the bottom is especially bad. Even when you tapped it with a fingernail it didn't sound like wood, but plastic. The customer service person I chatted with actually pulled a few out of their boxes and tried a lighter on the bottom like I did and said all she had in stock were real wood so I'm not sure if I got a new model, an odd ball or what. Either way it's on its way back now. They were very accommodating in their emails.
MT: My opinion also continues to evolve and not for the better either. After I decided to keep the 1903 shave cream, by pure chance I happened to visit: http://www.shaving-shack.com/shop/c...t-Eton-College-Shaving-Cream-150g-p-2731.html The Shaving Shack $10.50 (at current exchange) Taylor Old Bond Street shave cream appears to be identical to the J.Peterman 1903 shave cream with a slight change to the label.Container and label are dead ringers for the 1903 J. Peterman more expensive version. Like the song says: "Lessons learned are like bridges burned you only have to cross them once".
Some people say they are manufactured by the same UK company, Creightons, but I have three TOBS creams and either they aren't made by the same company or the formulas are completely different. The 1903 has a totally different look and texture, mine almost has a beaded appearance to the top layer, I imagine from glycerin. The scent is unique, but the lather similiar. The Peterman tub is 2 ounces larger as well.
MT Glad to hear that the shave creams have different ingredients.I havent tried it yet but it has a wondrerful scent -a bit of citrus and my wife says sandalwood overtones.Checked the weight and Im not sure if 150 grams is net of tub or not.Mine weighs about 10 oz. in the tub.
Yep! I picked a 1903 shave cream and am enjoying it! Nice review Martin! Located Here Once in a while, if you were so inclined to do a search on an unamed online auction site, you might find a tub of the cream or an aftershave balm...if you were so inclined. Otherwise the $22 sale price makes this one worth the money!
