What other brands of straight razors are good ? So far I have looked at all the Dovos, I dont mind spending up to $200 on my second razor. I like the DOVO Red Bismark., but what other brands are really good in that price range?
My favorite razor is a Thiers-Issard Le Grelot 3/4 to full hollow. There is also a 1/4 grind Le Grelot that I hear people raving about. There are a few left at http://www.rasurpur.de/english/. While there are many great razors to choose from, IMO this is the opportunity to seize right now.
JoAnna Right now I think I want to stick with brand new razors that are really good up to $200. Im not quite ready for the "Vintage" thing . I want to learn more before I start getting into those, but I do see myself leaning toward a custom in the near future.
In terms of brands, I guess you are limited to Dovo and TI, perhaps Henckels, if you are talking new razors. Then there is NOS and the range widens but the stock shrinks. The TI Le Grelot is a nice razor for sure. Would not go wrong with one of those. James.
Hello Mike257! For me are the finest new razors from Heribert Wacker. He makes more than 50years straight razors. He lives in Solingen. razilo
I don't know anything about Heribert Wacker's razors but I noticed that there wasn't a link, so I found one for you, here.
The Wackers are not to bad , this is a nice one http://www.shavingshop.com/index.ph.../shavingshop.com/index.php?page=1&category=74
Looks absolutely lovely Mike! Just a word of warning on the goldwashed carbon steel razors. Make sure you avoid any situation where staining or rust may develop. Getting rid of it will invariably mean you will lose the goldwash. It actually is not that difficult to avoid - just maintain it properly and all should be good. I only say this because someone I know very well allowed his Dovo Bergischer Lowe to develop a rust spot on the spine under the goldwash... James.
Mike,I'm with Chimensch on this one,you can't beat the LeGrelot's. They are fantastic, buttery smooth shavers.
ok I have it narrowed down to these, I sent an email for a quote. http://customstraightrazors.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?pid=59&fullsize=1 http://customstraightrazors.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?pid=91&fullsize=1 http://customstraightrazors.com/coppermine/albums/razors/normal_damas1_840.jpg
So, if I understand correctly, you're going over $200 and to a custom ... I guess the future was nearer than you thought. Not at all to my taste, but that's what differences of opinion are all about. The other problem I have, is that the quality of the shave is very important to me. I have around twenty razors and some shave really poorly and others are fantastic. I would have a big problem paying a lot of money for a razor that I didn't know how it shaved.
Yes that seems to be the way I roll, but If it's in the $800 range Im not sure I will go for it right now, and I would expect it to shave good, I would be pissed if it didnt.
I have only heard good things about Robert's customs. I think you can be assured of a good shave with one. James.
