I've read rave reviews about the lime and the lavendar, but has anyone tried Castle Forbes sandalwood? I like sandalwood. I don't like lime. I already have a Lavendar that I'm satisfied with (AOS).
Yes JoAnna is correct, it is sandalwood and cedar. I have a sample of it, but not crazy on the scent so I haven't tried it yet.
Yep. Thats exactly right. Its Cedarwood and Sandalwood. I'm sure its fantastic. But I haven't heard word number one about it... good or bad. CF is great cream, this has been confirmed by reviews of the lime and lavendar - people whine about the cost. But scent is one of the big draws for me besides efficacy. I want the best creams. I want the best soaps. I've already spent so much on razors, balms, scuttles, oils, and ancillary products, that to chince out on the cream or soap is really just splitting hairs. Why not have the best? I don't need 20 different creams to choose from. I just want 2 or 3 of the very best. They're a big part of the shave. Anyway, I guess I'm just justifying another silly purchase of another product that I want to procure and I'll be damned if rationality or common sense is going to stop me. But still... the lather, yanno? Its one of the most important parts of the shave. Its worth shelling out a few extra bucks IMHO.
Sometimes the scent really changes once its whipped into a lather. Where did you get the sample from?
Colonial drugs distributes CF samples in the US http://www.colonialdrug.com/ send them an email with your address to 1000scents @ colonialdrug.com and they will send you a sample of all the shave creams, as balms and pre-shave. some fragrance samples. If you do order, they also give free shipping if you say you are a member of B
Hiya, This would be one product I'd definitely sample before purchasing. The scent hasn't been all that well received by most who've tried it, which is a shame. The stuff was years in the making and was a big deal when it was finally released about a year ago, and it received good marks for performance. The fragrance though, is very much a YMMV sorta thing, so a sample's the way to go. Hope that helps, Martin
Thank you for bringing this to my attention... Thank you for passing on that info....email sent :happy088
I received my sample of the Cedarwood & Sandalwood today from Colonial Drug. I'm a little stuffy, but it seems a little light on the scent in the container. I also received the Lavender and Lime scents, and they seem stronger. I can tell you right now I do not like the Lavender scent. I will try the Cedarwood & Sandalwood in the morning and report back here tomorrow. Thanks again to superbleu for the Colonial Drug link.
Matt, the scent will really come out in the lather. I actually like it but doesnt blow me away. I catch more of the cedar than the sandalwood personally. Their matching ASB is quite pleasant but not for that price! Colonial is a great place to visit... I was like a kid in a candy store. Sold everything I got off though You will agree that the stuff is not worth the $$$ though.
Well, today's shave resulted in lather that was a bit dry. I'll try it again tomorrow and see if I can get a better lather from it. I'm sure I'll be able to, it's just that at 0400 hours this morning, I wasn't going to play around or dump it and retry. So I just shaved with it. Meh. As for the scent, it's really not very sandalwoody at all. I guess Shawn's right saying that the cedarwood is the dominating scent. Whatever (if it's the blend, or the cedarwood dominant) it is, it kind of reminds me of a type of chocolate candy - the kind you might find in a Valentine's Day gift box. I don't know why, but when I smelled it that's what I thought of. Maybe the scent is a little on the sweet side, I guess? Anyway, already long story short - not a big fan. To get my sandalwood fix I had to follow with Ogallala Bay Rum & Sandalwood splash and Tam Dao EdT.
Matt, I think someone played a sick joke on you one Valentines Day:happy102 Chocolate covered saw dust ball maybe? I wish they would have sent you the matching ASB.....it really shines and you get the full scent IMO. I would never buy the stuff. I did have the Lavender ASB but sold it off b/c of irritation but oh it smelled so damn good!
:happy102 I do have the matching ASB. For whatever reason I didn't want to try it this morning. I'll use it tomorrow when I try the cream again. But I'm sure I'm not going to buy the stuff either way. Maybe the Lavender smells better once you start making lather, but in the tub it really stinks. :sick007
I was able to get a good lather today. Made for a very nice shave. The scent is growing on me, but I do not see it becoming a favorite. Also used the accompanying balm today. It's OK, didn't leave my face feeling greasy or anything, but it's not the most moisturizing. My face feels a little tight, which very rarely ever happens anymore....
Did you just send an email to Colonial Drug? I couldn't find a contact link except to their regular email address. I'd like the opportunity to try the CF cedar/sandalwood. And I appreciate that you've so willingly taken on the role of guinea-pig.
My pleasure. I don't mind trying stuff out, I kind of enjoy it. I'm real interested to hear your opinion on it. I sent an email to 1000scents@colonialdrug.com. I had them in a matter of days. Three CF cream samples the Cedarwood/Sandalwood, Lime, and Lavender. Plus the accompanying balms, and the CF pre-shave. They also sent 5 or 6 EdT samples, too. Very generous sample set in my opinion. They really packed the Cedarwood/Sandalwood cream sample container, too. About double the other two samples....
Well, I went ahead and requested the CF samples, and I've heard good things about Penhaligon's so I requested that too. I will report back with my findings. :happy088
I use and love the lime. The last time I sniffed the cedarwood I thought it smelled like leaves and dirt. I want to try lavender, because I do not have a lavender cream and I want one.
It smells like cedar and is more or less a woodsy scent which i guess the tree is growing out of dirt and supports its share of leaves. I think the cedar overpowers the sandalwood which is unfortunate but still a nice natural woodsy scent to say the least. If you really want to smell leaves and dirt and maybe even some smoke you should try out patchouli and vetiver. Thats some true leaves and dirt and some burned up forest to throw in the mix
Matt I'd be happy to take that stinky lavender off your hands for you . I wasn't impressed with CF sandalwood. Very weak in the scent department. Just not worth the $$ IMHO. There are other brands that perform as well w/o the big price. The lavender is definately Essential Oil scented and many find it an irritant. I get along well with lavender EO and that was the only CF sample I have liked.
