Alright maybe someone can help me out here. I don't ship packages, ever. I just received an order from a company the other day, then the next day I received the order again. So I contacted them and they said they must have shipped it twice by mistake and to simply mark the second "Return to Sender" so I won't be charged to ship it. How do I do this? Do I write it on the package, or is it something I get stamped on by the folks at the post office? Lastly, can I really re-seal the package and send it back??
My father spend fourty years working for the US Postal Service and told me all of the rules of the post and the answer to your question is yes. Take any marker you find and write in big bold letters Return to Sender and place it back in your mail box and you will not be charged for the package at all. No there is no stamp for this. Yes you may re-seal the package any way you want. The other thing I can say is according to postal law since you ordered one package and recieved two according to the US Federal Postal law the second package is free, gratis, anytime anyone sends you something in the mail that you did not order or ask for its free.
Thanks for the answer. I thought I had to go to the post office. Dropping it in a box is a lot easier since I'm on a campus. I know I could have just kept it and not said anything but hey, good karma right?
I remember a PSA from the post office with an eskimo holding an electric fan. After the voiceover explains that an unordered, unsolicited package was legally free, he smiles, hoists the fan, and says, "Gee, thanks!"
