2+ months of using DEs i decided to use a Gillette Sensor 3 disposable (for sensitive skin) last week. bbs smooth shave no matter what cream/soap i used. the results were the same and no irritation. in all fairness it took me years of trying disposables and cartridges to find the best one for me so i guess ill have to keep experimenting with different safety razors and blades to find the sweet spot.
Perhaps, but my skin has demonstrated that no plastic should ever touch my face at all and disposables are almost all plastic.
Whatever works for you is what is important. Doesn't matter what razor, soap, brush, etc. as long as you like it and you get a good shave. Have fun
I wouldn't say your a heretic... I isn't uncommon for newbies, and some old timers, to go back and test the performance of the latest produced shavers. Most actually find, and invariably o their amazement, that they give a very good shave. However, this is more a product of the acquired skill in properly performing a shave. Preparation, shaving/cutting form, post-shave actions work no matter what the vintage of the razor. So, other things really make this a followed hobby: nostalgia "greener" footprint lower cost product(s) quality product(s) diversity Hopefully you will enjoy the journey, as you dial in on your "sweet spot" for wetshaving.
I don't find my DE is far better than a cartridge, but it is far less enjoyable. I also find real cream/soap lather is what really makes the biggest difference in shave quality. If a cartridge works and you enjoy it, nothing wrong with it.
I'll admit I'm a heretic as well. I have went back to the Mach3 for the past few months to save a few minutes in the morning routine(and my skin was not doing well after the DE shaving). With sticking with the brush, high quality soaps, and much better shave technique, the shaves turned out just swimmingly. I have sense discovered the Queens Aftershave Milk. This stuff fixes up my skin and I can now shave with either the DE or the cart. In the name of all that is economically sound, I am now back to the DE.
Somewhat of a heretic myself, having tried DE shaving and not liking it I"m happily, no, VERY happily sticking with my Fusion. I love the angle, the balance and the feel and get a great shave in one pass on the face, 2 on the neck and throat area because of different growth directions. I get a month out of a cartridge so the cost is bearable but even if it only lasted a week or two I'd still use it, I like it that much. Never found a disposable I like, mainly because I like some "heft" in a razor. It seems to make the shave smoother the heavier the razor is. Just as long as it's well balanced. But if it works for you that's all that matters. After all being a "heretic" means you're doing what you think is right not what someone else has said is right for you.
Cartridges treat me fine just like DEs. But get a BIC disposable and watch the blood flow. Has been like that ever since I started shaving at 15.
I've used every type of shaving implement under the sun (barring sea shells) and instead of doing it cheaply, or doing it traditionally, or limiting the number of blades that shave me because they're "not cool", I just do what I feel. I get great shaves out of my Trac II, the cartridges are cheaper than DE blades, and it's been around for almost forty years. That's pretty damned "old school" and "traditional" enough for me.
I'm very blade-insensitive and use everything from straights to multi-bladers with pivoting heads and spring-loaded blades. I like keeping things fresh. The only razor I've used that's been bad out of the box is Super-Max's Kwik 3 disposable. They're manufactured dull. All said, I prefer DE to anything, as it's more enjoyable. If I feel like shaving in 11 seconds I opt for the Personna 1-blade throwaway, which I also use for travel. It's an exceptional razor, beats BICs blind and costs $1 per 10 at dollar stores.
Sas, everyone has their own ideas about what is best for them, yes? If they work well for you and give you satisfaction, you must everytime to shave with them.
This thread got me thinking about my cartridge razor. I haven't used it for a long time but thought I would give it a try. Ouch!!! I got a new cartridge blade from wifey's stuff and got all set up. I was surprised at the tugging - the damn thing wasn't as sharp as I was now used to. Hmm. Kept on going. I ended up with a couple of nicks which kind of surprised me. Afterwards my skin was sort of sore - as if there were shitloads of tiny tiny cuts or something. A weird tightness that wan't from any products - cause I use what I always use. I swear it was from some sort of chewed up surface of my skin!! I am glad I did it. It sucked. Now I can go back to a properly sharpened DE blade and never look back!
I too have used everything available. Started with electric razors went to disposables, cartridge razors, double edge and straight razors. Makes little difference what I use as long as it does not have any plastic in it and has no electric current running through it. So disposables and electrics are out. Cartridges will work but too much plastic in them. Would preferr to use my striaght if I can manage to figure out how to use it.
Cartridges suck for me... Glad someone still uses the things and supports those company's. But I do feel sorry for folks that can not use a Safety razor on a regular basis. Please feel free to use my share of them.
What was Gillette thinking when it designed the Fusion - with respect to its appearance. All previous razors at least look serious, glow-in-the-dark Nitros et al excluded. One aspect I like about Schick/Wilkinson is it has, as far as I know, never put out a razor that looks like a toy.
Carts no prob, just don't like the shave i get. Learning how to use a se. I perfer my de with a derby blade.
Don't think that Proctor and Gamble was thinking about apperance when it designed the Fusion. Personally I think that Proctor and Gamble was thinking one thing - how to make the thing cost less to make and raise prices to the consumer. In other words how to prey on their customers even more so. You can tell I have a bone to pick with Proctor and Gamble.
