After years of shaving with a Mach 3 and various cans of cream, I got bored with it all, it was always a chore to shave. So last week, I bought a Merkur Futur and a good badger brush. I have been using it for a few days now and am amazed at the difference. I am actually looking forward to shaving every day. I was a little nervous at first, but so far I haven't even knicked myself, knock on wood. Only problem now is I have been kicking myself in the butt for tossing out my Grandpa's old razors as junk about 10 years ago. And I am trying to figure out what type of blades I want to use.
Welcome to the den! I'd suggest a blade sampler pack. There are several online shops that have a selection of different blades in a sample pack. It's a great way to try a few different brands. Plenty of opinions about what's good and bad around here as well... Have fun! Cheers, Tom
Welcome to the Den! There are many different opinions on blades. It is a personal choice, but like said above, there are many online vendors that can sell you sampler packs of blades which will give you the chance to try different brands/styles.
Amazing how much fun one blade can be while multiple are so boring. What can I suggest that you don't already know? Here are some places on-line to get blades: razorandbrush.com (closed termporarily - go to members.boardhost.com/razorandbrush for more information), connaughtshaving.com. You should try some of the other types of double edge razors including twist to open, three piece open comb and three peice closed comb. Want a challenge, try a straight - I am still learning that one.
Add www.westcoastshaving.com, amazon.com, and ebay. If you go the ebay route, be careful. iamdarkness/burningdarkenss is a member on a couple of the shaving forums and is generally regarded as one of only a few reliable sellers.
I thought there might be a brother or 2 on this forum Nice to meet you as well. Thanks, I think I stick with the DE's for a while before I venture to straights, although I was smart enough not to throw out my other Grandpa's straight razors. Haven't thought about those in a while, might have to dig them out. And thanks for all the welcomes.
Ha . I can sympathize with you on that one, just about 4 months before I bought my first badger brush and started getting interested in a better shave, I remodeled my grandmothers bathroom and tossed away a treasure trove of old razors that were in the medicine cabinet. I am still kicking myself over that one. If I would have just put them up for a few months, I would have had some nice stuff to start out with.
