Hello, I'm a newbie to straight shaving, and already have 1 straight, a very nice Wostenholm Pipe razor that's pretty close to a full wedge. I'm interested in getting another razor (or 2) that are more hallow ground. I went poking around one of my local antique stores and they have quite a few, although most are in really bad shape. Of the few that looked to be in decent shape ( just need to be polished and honed) there were 4 that caught my eye, but I don't know much about them. I'd like to find out if any of them have good reputations. Lightning - That's the only marking on the razor itself, and it was etched on the blade. The original box was with it, but I couldn't make out where it was made. The box was pretty beat up, but the razor was very nice. Not much staining at all and not too much hone wear. Griffon - Had a 60 and XX stamped on the tang. Karnac Top Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a collector, just looking for a good razor that shaves well. Thanks,
Never heard of any of them. Check if any of them say solingen on them. That steel was generally considered good. Otherwise, its a crap shoot.
Griffon made great razors and I once had a "Lightning" one. Just make sure they aren't from China or Pakistan and chances are high you're gonna get a great razor
if you posted this over at SRP I bet someone there would know ... or look in the wiki there at the approved list.
