Everywhere I go now I'm scrutinizing people's shaves. And, not surprisinfly, the majority are pathetic. Most commonly I either see the person is not well-shaved - stubble - or he is but has shave-related blemishes, particularly ingrowns about the neck. Of the minority who are sporting good shaves I wonder how many know what they're doing and how many are just lucky. I've seen, for example, the way in which my father, 70, shaves. No technique whatever: puts on some canned foam, takes out a Trac II loaded with worn-out CVS cart., and proceeds to shave for about a minute in every single direction. Then he uses some Old Spice splash. Now that he's older he doesn't have as much facial hair as he used to and I believe this has a good deal to with his capacity to shave as he is. He's noted he always used to hate DEs on account of the fact that they cut too much, and older photos of him show ingrowns on his lower face and neck. At any rate, I know I'm not the only one here examining others' shaves, so I ask you all: What are you seeing out there?
You seem to have picked up my thoughts and put it here... Seriously, there are so many unforgivable shaves and unshaven guys out there, it makes u want to make them all have Ids on a shave forum or perhaps gift them a decent DE and a blade and teach them to shave... I guess being members of forums like these does give us some authority as shaving gurus...
Ah yes... I am also guilty of critiquing the shaves when they go in for close ups of actors. The big question.... do you still keep the your critiques to yourself or do you share them with others? I haven't stepped across that line... yet... And yes, I see a lot of stubble and a bit of irritation on many a neck. The only necks that I really see that are cleaned up are guys that I wonder if they could even grow a beard if they wanted.
I used to get a kick out of taking the bus to class in the morning. A hundred college kids, half of them guys, with irritation, ingrowns, and acne. Usually combinations of all. I'd just laugh on the inside and touch my neck. Free of in growns.
Never critiqued any except those of the celebities. Have seen some on the tube and remarked to the mrs that he or she need to meet with a razor. Or sometimes he/she needs to get a double edge or a straight, what ever the case may be.
Till about 5 yrs ago I'd shave one pass N-S, leading to ingrowns in my neck as my below the adam's apple grows S-N. Since then everything's been smooth save for that I had some spots here and there, which altogether vanished when I began using bar soap. But OMG do I keenly examine people's shaves. And yes, I cross the line at times. People usually don't seem to care about their shave-related ailments. My brother's neck, for instance, could be on the package of every single ingrown treatment in the world. I have not seen so many ingrowns, inflamed & puss-filled, in my life. When he, 21, shaves he doesn't pay attention to his beard pattern in spite of my telling him to. He always complains about how painful it is to shave, but he never cares to fix the problem - a mechanical one. It's nice being able to shave everyday, enjoy it and have no troubles on account of it.
Around my home in Bangkok I see clean shaven people every where I look. But that is because Thais are largely incapable of growing anything more than a bad teenage mo. But now that I'm on holiday in Australia I have noticed myself slipping further and further into insanity. On an outing looking for shaving supplies I noticed, but managed to keep it to myself, that the salesman at the shaver shop looked like he could have stood a little closer to the razor when he shaved.
You notice people's shaves? I notice peoples lack of shaving. I'm not knocking it, it just seems that for some reason there's a trend to where if your body produces facial hair, it's your duty to let it grow out for several days and then shave it off. I notice it more and more the older I get, and realize that I too was young once, so I really can't say anything.
I'm only critical of my own shave, mostly. I'm never happy with my chin... seems like it's impossible to get it as clean as I'd like. Now, I've given my brother a hard time about 'unshaving'. He isn't trying to grow a beard, but he doesn't shave often enough, hence 'unshaving'. I keep toying with the idea of getting him one of those Feather DE's that Pauldog sells but I don't know that he'd be any better about using it.
90% of guys that I see have necks that looked like mine did before I saw the light. Poor bastard's.happy102
Same here. I used to have a neck full of ingrowns and I marveled at the guys who had clean shaven necks with no abrasions, ingrowns or acne. I used to wonder how they did it. They didn't necessarily use DEs or straights, but I figured there had to be a secret. Suffice it to say, I haven't had ingrowns for quite a while now. It isn't an issue at all anymore.
