The 100 year old shave

My quest to shave with a 100 year old razor is now complete. My latest razor acquisition was waiting for me in the mail today. A 1908 single ring in pretty good condition (only real problem is the plating on the top of the head is mostly worn off) and perfectly functional. I just finished my first shave with the razor.

The 1908 single ring is definitely not a beginner's razor. My superspeed is certainly easier to use. My shaving experience is still quite limited. I'm still using walmart personnas, which aren't a particularly good blade, but I'm used to them and I suppose I'd be asking for trouble trying a more aggressive razor with feathers for the first time. :) I got a lot more razor burn than I typically get, probably due to the fact that I use too many passes. On the other hand, it's the closest shave I've managed yet. More practice should do the trick.

Mind telling what the attraction of a century old razor is. I have a straight thats only twenty but the techniques that I use with it is much older that a centruy.

Glad you managed to get one. The oldest I have is 1912, but that will have to do.

    Congrats.

That would most likely be a straight razor and that takes a lot of learning to use properly.

Chip off some flint into some thin, blade like slivers, sharpen it, and shave with rock that's millions of years old.

There was an obsidian razor/knife on ebay a little bit ago. I looked chipped to me, but it was hard to tell from the photos.

Justin - just wait a few more years and you can have a 100 year old shave too!

There's just something odd and nostalgic about using something 100 years old that is still completely functional. I'm still a long long way from playing with straights and I have a feeling that a really old straight in usable condition would be fairly rare and probably out of my price range.

Funny though, my fiancee made the same comment about using a sharp rock to shave. I think she was making fun of me though. ;)

Yup... that is the way I am looking at it as well. In the meantime if I get an older one, than I do. I am no big rush. No sense beating myself up trying to win one on the bay. ::kar

I picked up a single ring a little ways back and was pleasantly surprised by the shave..
    Congrats on completing your quest!

I have a 1909 single ring. Since I traded my 1900 lather catcher it is my oldest. I love the shave from it. And I agree that it is just a certain feeling using something that old. Who knows where that razor might have been in it's life time.

Glad you are able to complete your quest. Keep it up.

That is a great shaver I love mine it is in great shape the box is a little beat up but I have plans for that ,I got the razor for a song too.I use it in my rotation and have no complaints with its performance.I find myself more and more reaching for the open comb razors. So when you use that razor enjoy the 100 year old shave. Here are a few pics of mine. I was told it was a 06 but I havent looked it up I need to but its really not important at the moment.I need to rubb it with a little maas to freshen the shine up again since Ive been useing it alot as you can see the water spots and the razor in it. Congrats on your find ,would like to see you post pics of your new shaver.
