Ok so I have just recently ( yesterday) gotten into the world of wet shaving. I was given some shaving soap, and I ran with it. I have some questions regarding the brush. What are the best brushs for beginners? I have a boars hair brush right now. Are badger hair brushes better for newbies or is it all personal preference. I have picked up some KMF cream which it seems most people seem to like it for the money that it costs... I purchased a Merkur 38c safety blade, but was just given a single edge blade. Would be smart to not try the singe edge razor to start out? what are your thoughts? I just want to know what I am getting myself into.... thanks
some people like badger, others like boars and the most we like both. I would recommend you to watch Mantics videos in youtube to have a better idea of what is gonna be your shaving.Since nobody is gonna shave for you,you have to discover by yourself what you like, what you dont, what works best and what doesnt works at all. This is an interesting journey and the best part of it!!! Hope you enjoy it.
Boar brushes take a little more work to make lather...at least for me it does. But, the end result usually turns out the same as a badger. In fact, I prefer boar for soaps since they're normally stiffer bristles...
I started wetshaving with a Burma Shave Boar brush I got out of a clearance isle for a buck at Walmart. I use it most of the time. Soap or creams, it works just fine. Building good lather takes a bit of practice I found. The brush you use seems a personal preference thing. I have a beautiful badger brush, but keep using that cheap boar. Go figure!?
The Merkur 38c would be a safety razor. The blade is the sharp part that you insert in the razor. A single edge blade? It should be a double edge blade. If it is the one that came with the razor, don't use that. If it is a Merkur blade, don't use that. You can pick up some double edge blades at Wal-Mart or CVS or Walgreens or any similar kind of store. Most likely they will be the Personna brand double edge blades. Not considered the best by most people, but better than Merkur blades.
I know that that the Merkur is double edge. I was given a single edge straight blade. Does that make more sense??
Boar hair will work fine. Most like badger hair more but its a personal choice. If you move up there is no need to spend 300 dollars on a brush when one under 50 works just as good if not better, we will help you pick one out I am sure. KMF is a good cream, you did well. As for the blades, get a sample pack to try some out. I happen to think Merkur blades will shave just fine. Not the best but they work.
yep. but you should stay away from anything that's just a naked blade (no bar between your face and the sharp metal like a double edge razor). Too much potential for face shreddage.
yes i believe it is a shavette. Is it ok to use this of your face? the person that gave it to me told me she had got it at cosmotology school. Like I said earlier. I am really new at this.
I'm guessing you can get a good shave with one if you know what you're doing. But until you learn I'm betting you can do some damage. That's where my advice is coming from. Learn to shave with a Double Edge (DE) first and then move on to straights and shavettes.
Hmm.. Hair thinner probably. Could it be used for shaving? Maybe. I'm all for pictures of said device first. That would help.
To quote myself, do not use it. Sounds like a barber razor used to shave the back of the neck and the back of the neck only.
