    Hello all,

I have questions... I went to an antique shop this afternoon, and found a couple of DE Gillette Safety Razors. They are both 3 peice models and gold in color. I will post som pictures as soon as I can. I only paid 7.25 for both of them. Good price if you ask me, but I am not sure if they are any good.

Once I get the pictures posted. I was hoping that maybe someone would be able to tell me what model they are. Long shot I know.... I was not able to find and Identifing markings on any part of the razors. Anyway, pictures are soon to come.

    Thanks for your help again.

    Probably are..

If they have teeth like a comb (open-comb razor) they are probably either old types or NEW, if they don't have teeth - then they are techs

I'll take that bet. I'm going to say Old Types. By far they are the most prevalent razors I've come across in antique stores.

    Ok. I owe Will ½ a steak dinner! :happy102

The OC is a NEW, the other is a Tech. Nice finds, and a great price! I really enjoy both of mine! :happy088

Are Techs good. and what do you mean by a "new"? Are these capible of a good shave? I am sure you are just going to say that I have try them out and see, but i a will still ask the question...

Which one would you recommend using for the first shave?

At the time the NEW was promoted as the NEW gillette razor. It was never really meant as the name, but as the models weren't named it is what we use. It was made in the 30s. The techs were made in the 40s to early 70s. They are both good razors. Some techs are very mild, but yours looks like one that I had that was very nice. I would start with the tech.

  11. Hi Gus,

Here's my thoughts on choice of razors to use first....I'll even give you a few reasons.........heh.

I've never tried a Tech, but have read lots about em over the years. These are supposed to be a very good shaver.....maybe a little on the mild side. Lots of members recommend these as everyday shavers as well as for the new DE user.

I did shave with a NEW,as well as 4 other open combs, and I came to the conclusion that all of em were more aggressive than what I preferred. That meant I had to go slower, pay more attention to detail, understand that the margin for error was less, and still have a less than comfortable shave. And that's after doing this DE thing for a while now. No, I didn't cut myself with those open combs, but only because my technique is good. Oh, my everyday razor is a fatboy set on #3.

So, I'd say start with the Tech and save yourself a bit of grief. The main thing when starting out is to learn technique, and the milder razor makes more sense to me. Heh, the mistakes will still happen, but it won't be quite as sharp a learning curve. Whatever razor you decide on should be used exclusively for about 3-4 weeks before switching to the other. Use the same type blades as well.

    Anyway, just a thought,
    Martin

Oh yeah, maybe try a milder blade like the Crystal or Red Personna if you have em. Remember, you wanna make starting out as painless as possible...heh.

The NEW is one of my favorite razors and is in my rotation. Unlike Martin, I get a beautiful close (3-pass) shave with no irritation. I would say, compared to my Tech, it is more aggressive. However, while I use the Tech once in awhile, I don't use it nearly as often as the NEW. There is a reason the acronym YMMV is probably the most used one on this site. Enjoy them both and see which works better for you. I have four favorite razors that I rotate. Each gives me an excellent shave but the shaving experience is slightly different with each. You may end up liking both of these equally and find yourself switching off occasionally just for a change. Most of all, have fun. ;)

good buy! I have a tech and a new- they're both good. I like aggressive razors. I don't find the new to be super aggressive. Yes, it shaves closer than a tech, but I think it might be milder than a Gillette red tip.

My point is, don't let the talk about aggression delay you from trying the new.

I have never tried the new but one of my eight razors at home is a tech and its great. Personally I am nuts about the others which are super speeds. For some real odd reason I woke up one morning and had a blood bath in the shave den, really carved myself up real well. I used the tech for a week until my face managed to put itself back together again. The tech managed to keep me looking presentable and allowing my face to put itself back together again. So I think that is saying something for the tech if it was able to do that for me. Again I will say nothing about the new.

Nice find! I bet you are already trying to find the next antique mall. I know I love hunting for razors at these malls. I have found that most will be display cases so they can be locked up to avoid the 5 finger discount.
