Thanks to Shawn for providing me with a nice sample of Alt Inns. to try. The first thing that hits you is the mentholated blast. It is chilly and immediate. As for the scent all you get initially is that medicinal smell that menthol gives off. After a few minutes it settles down and you start to get a sweet, familiar fragrance wafting to the nose. I could not place it at first and had to do a google search to figure out the ingredients. Turns out a main ingredient is pure Virginia tobacco! Nicotiana Tabacum to be precise. The only other stuff in it is alcohol, water and menthol so it's pretty much a one note scent. Nothing nasty like stale cigarette smoke though. Something more rich and fragrant like a nice pipe tobacco maybe. I'm not a smoke aficionado so I couldn't say exactly, but it is nice. The scent hangs in there all day and is one of those that lingers subtly in the background. Manufactured in Austria it is not a common aftershave that is readily available. Superlather.com carries it at $32 for 100mL but are currently out of stock. Google and Amazon shopping yielded no results. I did find some information about it here, and I believe you can buy it there as well. 9.50 GBP which is a pretty good price though I didn't research any further so no idea what s/h charges would be. That site says it will be available for order as of March 9. So, thoughts on Alt Innsbruck?
One thing I just noticed, and was not aware of, is the bottle pictured says "Eau de Cologne." That would explain the long lingering and strength of the scent. I have mixed feelings about the AI. In some ways I really like the scent, however I don't really think it smells like tobacco. Maybe I need to go to a tobacco store and sniff some of the pipe tobaccos. I feel the same way about Tabac which, if I'm not mistaken, is also based on the tobacco leaf oil. Anyways, I think the scent is somewhat feminine, or at least not "masculine" IMO. SWMBO turns her nose up at both, she can't stand the scent. AI is also the first A/S that I could really feel the "face freeze." I have an Iced TSD milk and a Wesley & *** (can't recall second name) Lightly Mentholated that I just don't feel much from. Maybe a little cooling, but not much. The AI though - WOW! The face freeziness is absolutely incredible! Almost half an our later, I'm still feeling the cooling. AI makes me want to buy menthol crystals myself and start adding it to everything I have that is not mentholated, and even the things that are. So there it is. I like the scent, although I'm not sure it's a scent I want to smell like. And SWMBO certainly doesn't groove on it. But that freezy face is absolutely incredible and makes me keep coming back to it.
I had always wanted to try this stuff b/c of all the rave reviews and my curiosity got to me. I pulled the trigger! I did opt to go with refill bottle from Superlather which is 100ml for $20. The first experience was lovely! Growing up in the south I have been around tobacco in different stages from the fields, barn, rotten, chewed, smoked, etc. This scent is one of those you have to experience to understand. I personally love it and glad I pulled the trigger on it. I of course love menthol and this stuff is just right under Osage Rub in the cooling dept. The scent stays with you for the majority of the day also as mentioned earlier. I dab some on my wrists as well since I do not wear a cologne if using the AI that day. I love the stuff and it will ALWAYS be in my rotation. I wish it was easier to obtain but at least we US folks do have options. If you havent tried, I would strongly suggest you do. I believe Superlather sells samples
This is definitely one of my top 4 aftersahves. I really miss not having it with me. The smell is intoxicating for me. I get a great deal of compliments when i wear it. I wouldnt hesitate to buy it.
It's been on my list! One question: do you get a nicotine buzz? Will it help you quite smoking? Ok...that's two.
My GF reminded me she does not like it....Loves Clubman but has no love for the AI? The tobacco throws everyone off because it is really not the scent right out of the bottle. Kind of soapy and musky? I suck with scent descriptions hence lack of membership at Basenotes.....Amazingly there is not a write up of the AI over there? Quite odd?
SWMBO doesn't like it either.... That is odd there isn't a writeup of it over there, especially considering it says it's an EdC. ...
From Wikipedia(aftershave): Many fashion designer houses lend their names to brands of aftershave, and thus aftershave is sometimes mistakenly referred to as Eau de Cologne. I am really surprised it isnt at basenotes being they have every other AS in the world. I would be crucified over there among those fragrance snobs if I wrote a review over there.
I LOVE this stuff. Unfortunately, I can only wear it in the summer. I applied it once when the temp was below freezing and almost suffered from hypothermia. AI give one of the best face freezes ever and it smells amazing.
You live pretty close to the North Pole so you understand Jeff. It's tough to use this when it's the middle of winter. It feels like someone shoved your face in a pile of snow. Now in the summer, it rules.
AI is one of my favorite aftershaves. I use it in any season and was able to hoard and extra bottle! The scent is really pleasing to me. Jordan
Used it for the first time in awhile. Icy blast is the best way to describe the feeling after the initial alcohol burn. The frosty feeling on the face lasts for a few minutes. Skin feels fantastic after use. Similar to the original Pitralon, but with a much more agreeable scent. The scent is very rugged and manly, but not an old man type of scent.
