before you take the razor to it? I don't let mine sit very long and I'm thinking that this may be an important step in my prep that I am missing currently.

Not long for me. I usually shave right out of the shower though, so my beard is ready to shave.

When I do shave without showering first, I usually lather and cover with a hot, wet towel for a couple of minutes to soften things up. Helps a bunch.

2 minutes 38 seconds, not a second more or less!

Seriously, I let a thin coat sit for a few minutes while I do some man-scaping. The lather really softens up the hair and in fact Proraso recommends something similar to this as a prep. I then lather on top of the old stuff and shave away.

Since I use a hot towel for my prep, I put the razor to it almost 30 seconds later that it takes to fetch it. Exception if I am using Godrej with lanolin in it to allow it to act on the stubble further...

2-3 minutes sounds about right for me also.

I do facelathering and usually it takes me like 2 minutes to get a great lather and I let it stay another 30 seconds more as Im rinsing the razor and getting ready for the shave.

I used to create a thin face lather, let it sit, rinse - then do a serious lather and shave.

Now I just lather and shave.

Note I invariably wash my face with soap and hot water prior to shaving it.

2-3 minutes. I lather....apply deodorant and hair stuff and start shaving.

The lather doesn't sit on my face for more than 15 seconds before I take my razor to my face. I face lather as well which I believe helps with my prep.

Long enough for two towels to cool down

I face lather so I feel that the lather gets well worked into the whiskers. So it's about 30-45 seconds after lathering that a razor gets used.

You should give the lather a couple of minutes to soften the beard. (You'll even find that in the instructions of a lot of canned goo brands.) If you face lather then you are good to go as soon as you put the brush down. If you lather in bowl first then find something else to do for a couple of minutes while the lather sits.

Im with the hot towels for +/- 30 secs, lather & then straight into it.

i do the same when i use proraso as the towels really do the trick.

I let it sit on my face and then flip my blade over. I do a touch up on the lather and go for it.

As long as it takes to clean my brush and wet the razor.

I don't leave it on the face very long at all. Usually I'm shaving the lather off within a minute. Any longer, and all but the most lucrative soaps have a tendency to dry out after so long.

Until it starts to feel like it's going cold or drying out.
The longer the better until either of them though. The lather does soften the beard, so I can tell the differences when shaving between a lather applied and I start shaving straight away (the worst), and a lather left on for 2-3 minutes (way better).
