Replacing my long loved Amish shaving cream

I have been shaving with a safety razor for 7 years. For the last 6 year I had received a package of an Amish made soap for Christmas. But all great things come to an end and that group stopped making the soap. I did receive a box of different soaps they got off different venders on the internet and some other local made stuff but I can’t find anything that was close to what I had been using.

Last week I was at my brothers and there was a can of cheap 99 cent stuff and it’s the best thing I have used in the last few weeks. I did get my self a can and have used it a few times since.

Nothing is the same as what I had been using. The only information that was on it was there name and what scent it was. I have done some looking and searching but I thought it was time I just asked. I have normal skin and grow thick tree trunks. I shave in the afternoon after my shower to clean up form working on the farm.

Can someone point me into a direction to find something close?

Welcome to TSD! Without much information, it'll be difficult to match up.

    1. What was the scent?
    2. Do you know how it was made? (glycerin, melt & pour, cold process)
    3. What are the different soaps you received off the internet?
    4. What was the name of it?

Welcome to the den! Good luck with your search. If it was Amish made, then I'm sure it was a lye-based hot process soap. Try a good soap like MWF or similar top shelf...

    1. The scents were lemon, lime, orange, and lavender.
    2. I have no idea how it was made.
    4. The only info that was on it there labels was the scent and the name of there farm. I don’t know the name of there farm.

    3. I have tried all the block/cake soaps off classicshave, Williams mug soap, van der hagen, colgate, and a few different odds and ends.

Jim with it being Amish I bet your right with it being lye.

Welcome to the forums!Im intrigued about that soap made by the Amish.I bet that it was a good soap. There are so many good options,it just depends what you are looking for.It you look for homemade soaps TSD,Irena(soapbuddy here) and Mamma Bear makes good ones (as well of other makers on ebay ).If you look for soaps made by companies Tabac, Michael Wool Fat and most of the shaving sticks will perform good but I guess that you have to find what fragance you like the most.
Hope you find the right one for you.

At this point I don’t care it I get something hand made or not; I’m just looking for something that will give me that shave. I don’t know if my nose would stand the spice in Tabac but I did order Michael Wool Fat that I read had a soapy smell. I should get it some time next week and will let you know how I like it.

I'll ask at the harness shop this afternoon. The Amish own and operate quite a few businesses around here and they may have something in their little store. I've never thought to look for a shave soap in there!

With the talk here of the Amish shave soap, I did a Google search for it and came up pretty much empty handed. But now I have a question for the soap makers and experts on the board.

I found these bars listed with their ingredients. The list sounds like a good many shave soaps that I have seen listed minus the addition of glycerin. I was wondering if any of the experts thought this soap could be used for shaving if a good enough lather could be made?

That soap cotains Tallow and it looks like a really good formulation...

I know Amish males were allowed to shave until they got hitched. Once there hitched they only shave there top lip. Women can’t cut any of there body hair. Men cut there hair the way there group says they can; different groups have different cuts.

Are those soaps suitable for shaving? Does not look that way to me.

Hi and welcome farmer. Some good advice on the tallow based soaps. I think you'll find them comparable to what you were using. MWF isn't my favorite, but should work just fine.

You may also consider some creams that have proven themselves quite effective. Not sure where you live (presumably rural), but if there's a city nearby try the Bath & Body Works CO Bigelow cream made by Proraso. Also The Body Shop makes a decent house blend cream. Natural Foods stores sell KMF and Toms of Maine that also work well. All of these are reasonably priced and get good press on the forums.

    Good luck and welcome again.

Your right and I do live out in the sticks. I am driving to town (68 miles one way) and I will stop by bath and body works and grab some Proraso made stuff.

No luck at the store and Yoder at the harness shop is going to ask around on it, so it was a bust for shaving soap.

May I suggest Pre de Provence shaving soap. It has a mild scent that doesn't linger after the shave. I find the lather rich and protecting and when I whip it up on my brush I get enough for three passes.

Another suggestion would be to take a look at the soap reviews here. You might find something close to your Amish soap.

Good luck and welcome to TSD. :)

Here is washington, dc there is one or two amish markets and I have never seen them offering anything in the way of wet shaving anything for sale. Mostly meats, candies and furniture.

I have been using Laurelstone shave soap from Oregon. It won't help you with the scents you're looking for. I got it from an Ebay store. I have been to its website and, despite its annoying home page, I will go there for more. It lathers like a dream. I have tried several soaps from local soap makers and browsed a number of other sites. Laurelstone is the only local, small time soapmaker I have seen that uses tallow in all its soaps, shaving, bath and laundry.

Sorry I didn’t get back to post but I got a phone call to go bail up some hay that someone else had cut and I could not pass up the opportunity. We; 5 employees and I bailed and stacked 15,000+ small bails on to wagons. We cut them at 65 pound bails and it took right at 115 hours of labor in 2 days to getter done.

My wife went to town and got me a tube of C.O. Bigelow. It’s the first tube shaving product I have used but I like it. It’s not the same but it dose work well for me.

For now I’m happy with what I have but I will continue my search.
