What do you use when you are traveling? Each of my Dovos has their own box, perhaps that's enough. Still it would like to hear what forum members use when they are on the road.
Jim - if you are still poking around on this one. You indicated you lined the drawers with dessicants. Can you explain this? Lots of little packets, or some other sort of product? Where do I look for and buy dessicants?? Do you oil your razors with camellia or some other oil?? Thanx And MsB - love the razor case - great idea!! Perty too!
I can try to explain, sure. I live in Japan, so there might not be an equivalent in Canada, but what I get are basically large packets (up to about 6cmx6cm) of silica gel dessicants. Some of them are also treated with an antifungal agent. They are used in Japan to keep closets and drawers free of mold in the incredible humidity. They also have big box-type ones used for whole rooms! I buy them at the Japanese dollar store, Daiso--they sell everything. I would have no idea where to find them in department stores or whatever...in the laundry section? Storage section? I'm not sure. I keep a few in my shave drawer, but recently they haven't been keeping up so I might have to get more drastic. And yes, I use camellia oil on my razors.
Thanx for the info. I am going to begin the hunt here. I had thought about using dessicants before with some of my safety razors and the str8s as well - but I have not yet started to look. I will now get off my ***! Thanx! I gotta gets me some of that thar camelia oil too! thank you for your time on this Jim (and your advice on a while back on the str8 sharpening worked out great! I am still shaving happily away!)
Check online at photo supply places. I got a bunch of reusable packets at, I think, BJs Photo. You heat them in the oven (and maybe a microwave) to dry them out. They change color when they're saturated. Oh, that reminds me, I need to dry mine... They supposed to be good of carrying photo gear in the tropical areas where condensation causes all kinds of problems. Jim, how do you dry out your desiccants? Or do you need to? When I searched, oh maybe a year ago, I found lots of balk single use stuff, vented containers you can fill with whatever your favorite is, or these reusable packs I ended up getting. I would mind getting something I could just throw in and forget.
I have some plastic boxes for a few bucks each I got a Classic for shavettes that didn't have boxes. I also got a lot of about 1/2 doz faux wood Puma boxes out of the Bay. But when I travel, I take a DE, since I don't use a straight (yet).
I'm glad to help, no need for thanks! And I'm glad to hear your razors are treating your well. The ones I use have a few blue beads that you can just see through the packaging. The package said that when you can no longer see the blue, they're saturated. When that happens, they recommend you pop them in the microwave on LOW for about 5 minutes (it takes about 7 min at 200w for me) and they're ready for reuse.
Thanx for the tip re photo supplies for finding these. I have not had luck so far looking but haven't tried a photo store. It makes sense that they would stock them for sale. I will definately check it out. Opinions?? - - I tend to put razors and cases in small plastic ziploc style bags to keep them clean and separated. It feels tidy too and I kinda like that. But I am starting to suspect that sealed plastic bags might be a problem?? Does anybody have a comment on that? Am I possibly creating problems more than solving them? Comments?
This is the box where I store all my razor. At least the ones that are not a project I will get to one day. The rack inside is just made from hobby wood. It holds about 30 razors.
I've had my eye on a small cedar wood box at a local antique/flea market we have would that be acceptable for storage of my DE/SR? not sure what i would line it with any suggestions?
After every use I dry the razor and oil it with either Ballistol or Japanese rust-prevention oil and insert it in its leather pouch.
Storing SR Same here...I use mineral oil on my DOVO 6/8 special Blonde after every use. I plan to use it on my Boker which is in transit.
