Input on a Merkur 180c as a first DE razor?

I've searched these forums all the ways I could, but haven't founda post that mentioned the 180c.

I am considering purchasing one as the reviews on Amazon.com are pretty good, but was surprised to not find any threads mentioning it.

A runner-up might be the 38c 'Barberpole,' but I'm not sure I want that extra weight as a beginner DE user.

The 180 is more commonly known as the 23C. Look for review or threads on that.

I have a 163, is this similar to a 33C?

 

23C is the Classic long handle

33C is the Classic short handle

Both have the safety bar and are 3 piece

 

Well, after much thought I went and ordered what I believe is the Merkur HD for two reasons:

- It seems to be one of the most highly recommended razors

- I thought that if the HD is slightly shorter it may be easier to keep at a proper angle when shaving under the chin

Sweet. I have both the Classic(33) and Classic Long(23). I love them. I also have a 1904 and it is my best shaver. I want to get an HD next and should have gotten the Barber Pole off the B/S/T thread.

 

I was a little turned off by all the reviews of the barber poles I've read. It really seems like a 'love it or leave it,' (50% like it (if that) and 50% leave it) razor solely due to its weight.

That was a bit too 'iffy' for me to choose as a first DE razor. Hopefully the tried and true HD remains a favorite for a reason. I won't know until at least the middle of next week though.

The long handle is a great starter razor. Course I'm a fan of longer handles.

 

Basically all Merkurs are great razors.. If I had to choose one to recommend Ill go for a HD.. (34c)..
