Greetings all! I've been reading this board for about a month now and am just about ready to make the switch to wet shaving. Just got my first cream today, have a couple others on the way, and a soap to try too in case I like that. I'm getting a scuttle from Georgetown Pottery, but I'm also going to try out a mug to see how I like that. Not sure face lathering is right for me at this point. Brushes & razors I can get locally (but I wasn't as impressed with the cream/soap choices), so if anyone has any thoughts on those I'm all ears.
Hello again! You already have my recommendation heading your way, :happy088 so I'll leave it to the fine folks that come in here to give you theirs.
I'm in SW Ohio there's a little smoke shop by me that also carries a few DE razors and brushes. Not a lot, but I figured since they're actually here where I can see & hold them it's a good place to get a start.
Absolutely! It's always great when you can see and touch before buying. Sometimes stuff is cheaper online though, when you go to buy. Unless you need that instant gratification. And trust me, lots of folks around here do.
I'll be careful about prices - thanks for the tip! I expect I'll end up wanting to try more than 1 type of brush anyway.
:signs046 from San Diego, California. I used to live in NW Ohio (Toledo). Wet shaving is a great hobby and a great journey. After you get that DE go on line and get yourself a sample pack of blades. (Take a look at westcoastshaving.com for a start.) The blade just may be the most subjective piece of gear you will get. There will be a lot of opinions out there but, ultimately, it's what your face likes that is most important. Good luck on your journey and enjoy those shaves.
Not taking away from Freddie at all, :signs107 but he reminded me that Bram has a stickie with vendors who sell sample packs listed here.
Thanks Bill. I knew there was at least one post with a list of places to order blade samples but couldn't remember where. I just wanted to get the ball rolling. Also, blades are inexpensive enough that sometimes I've ordered just one or two packs of blades based on suggestions here at TSD. For example, when I ordered something recently from the TSD store, I had them throw in a pack of Astras and a pack of Wilkinson U.K.'s. For someone just starting out, though, the sample pack is definitely the way to go. :happy088
Haven't picked one out yet. Since they've got a few (half dozen or so) at a local-ish smoke shop I was just planning to go with what feels good in my hand.
