Second on the barbasol. It's easy to find and lubricates well. Sometimes bringing all the brush and soap and lathering gear is too much if I'm travelling.
Everyone is free to chose their own shave. Find what you like and what works and go for it. I have heard from others the Gillette Foamy (various "flavors" available) are very good as far as caned stuff goes. I can't say personally but hope this helps.
PS - To those who've tried canned Proraso how does it compare, so far as scent and sensation are concerned, to the classic Green?[/QUOTE] Proraso Red in a can is the way to go, superb stuff.
I've never like the brush ritual either. That's why I use brushless shaving cream. KMF mint. You just apply it by hand and it works great. All canned gel/cream that I've tried is too drying and is not as smooth of a shave.
I just responded to another thread on this... my vote for best foam is green proraso (very cooling, smells similar to the lathering variant... good stuff). One thing I would tell people is that it seems the first few shaves with foam, from a brand new can, the stuff is kind of dry. Not sure why it is, but after several shaves (or, just squirt a bunch out when you first get a can and dispose of it) it seems to be more lubricating. that's been my experience, at least best Drew
I'm new here but I'll jump in on this. While I prefer my brush and soap when I'm home it's just too much for traveling light. That's when I go with the small travel size of the Barbasoll and just a razor. However, this will not prevent me from looking into and easy to pack brush and soap program and will be watching for what others are doing for this.
Everybody here is so nice... Since I'm a newbie here, I'm going to be a complete jerk... ARE YOU CRAZY??????? I would never use a can... EVER!!! And sick of the brush and soap ritual? Really? ok... sorry for being a jerk. I know we all say YMMV, but I'm using a 5 year old badger brush I got off ebay for $25, and Williams Soap, and I'm sure I get to "lather" within 20 seconds. With that said, it really is your face, and if you like a can, that's fine (of course!). And probably 99% of America thinks we are all crazy for not using Edge gel and a Fusion razor. I mean, a three pass shave? Blades from Turkey? More than one razor? $30.00 soap pucks? We are crazy! lol
If you absolutely can't deal with the brush and razor, I have had equally good results with the american crew gel. Its clear, and looks like aloe vera, but it does the trick. The only downside is that it kind of gunks up a DE razor.
I am not against the canned foams or gels, because they do serve a purpose. I suppose they are much better to the skin than an electric razor. However for me, I was getting much too much irritation and rash from them in the few times I tried them. Besides, a brush and a good soap or cream is so much more enjoyable, and it gives a far better shave, and better skincare.
I don't know that I agree with the idea that traditional soaps/creams necessarily provide better skin care. Canned foam allows me to get a BBS shave, consistently, without the nicks and weepers I would almost always get using a brush and soap or creams. I submit that avoiding even minor nicks and abrasions on a daily basis is skin care in and of itself... As Drew mentioned, canned foam is certainly dryer than traditional lather, and I usually mix in a little water as I apply foam to my face. Maybe it's just a result of poor razor technique, but canned 'goo' just seems to work better for me...
This is my kind of thinking, particularly in regards to cream - cheap does not always equal poor quality. I'm of the opinion that those who can devote a sizeable portion of their morning or evening to a leisurely shave should go for the brush and soap and even the straight razor. Or even if you're just someone who feels the need to make shaving your "me" time. But if you just want to get on with removing hair from your face and neck, basic, no-frills, time-tested canned stuff is good enough.
Same here. I don't prefer it, but there are days when time just doesn't permit a handcrafted lather. Luckily, those days are rare.
In my experience, canned foam or gels for that matter don't seem to coat the face as clingy as if you use a cream or soap, nor is it as slick. It feels like the canned stuff just sits on top of the skin as compared to the soap and cream adheres better. Perhaps it's the brush that makes the difference.
Couple of things, boar brush? No thanks. Get a badger, it doesnt need to be expencive if you are careful in choice. Also while its nice to use high end soaps a 2 oz Palmolive shave stick will get fast good lather results even in hard water. Cost like 75 cents. I love my bagder and drying off the little fella is no trouble at all. A few gentle shakes and a little rub up on the towel is it.
Loreal MenExpert has a canned gel that I use with brush occasionally. It is pricey but the can has seemed to last a long time. I would recommend it. I picked up a tube of Nivea shave cream that has a great scent and also preforms well with a brush, $1.97 at Rexall. I do enjoy the soaps much more. Wyatt
Once in a blue moon I'll use Barbasol or Noxema or some other canned foam but generally I prefer the simple boar brush and some good soap.
I took out my Barbasol (Soothing Aloe) this morning and had one of my best shaves! I really see now my own lather needs vast improvement! I'm going to get the menthol Barbasol this week, can't wait. I'm definitely going to keep Barbasol in my rotation. Today I used it with the Gillette Goal Stainless and it felt like a magical combination. I used a damp boar brush to rub Barbasol into my whiskers.
I used to use Nuetrogena gel in a can. Not bad, and I liked it better than the foamy kinds of goo. You have to work it into a lather with your hands.
