I just bought a Merkur "Hefty Classic - Slant Bar"

I have been using a Gillette fat boy adjustable with persona blades. Decided to branch out and bought this. I use Col. Cunk's amber soap and a badger hair brush.

any words of wisdom before the first merkur shave?

 

Yeah! Throw away the Merkur blade that came with it,,,,,,,,,, MHO of course ;-)

I use the same technique with my slant that I do with my HD, but I,m a little slower through the tough spots.

My 2p:

Make sure the blade is centered. Slants can sometimes have a bit of blade wiggle (like a Gillette Old Style). If the blade is askew, the shave may be a bit rough. Otherwise, they're awesome!

 

+1. Center the blade by looking from above, not from the side.

 

Chunk it and get a GEM.....

One of the worst shaves I have had yet was with one of those Merkur blades. They need to stick to the razors and leave the blades to the people who know how to make them.

+1 open comb micromatic, even. if you want an aggressive razor that gives a super close shave.
