I made these photos of my Thiers Issard razor today. Original photos were much larger but were resized by uploading programme.
There's just something about the TI scales that I love. That looks like a beauty, and very nice photos! I hope you enjoy using it. James.
I happy to see you like it . It's simple but stunning cutting/shaving instrument. Actually I look forward every shave with this great razor, so yes I enjoy it despite nicks and cuts . The curious thing that this model is labeled as 5/8 blade, but in reality it measures exactly 6/8 or 19 mm.
I'd seen this razor before and thought the inscription on the blade, the best I've ever seen, was custom. Is this razor in production or vintage? Beautiful pics.
Your great photos and the positive comments have convinved me to go with a similar TI. I have been pondering a either a DOVO Bismark or TI for a couple of weeks. Love the simplicity of yours. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
I am glad I my comments and photos helped you with your decision. I bought mine at DICK.BIZ from Germany. If I buy another razor it will be Thiers Issard razor but likely with mirror polish on entire surface of the blade. With satin polished Le Dandy's blade bevels (the spine and tang are mirror polished) you have to be carefull not to neglect the blade since this high grade carbon steel is more prone to staining (cosmetic matter) and rust (damages the blade) than some low grade carbon steels.
I have gone for a razor that is same profile as your "Le Dandy" only it has "Spartacus". I bought it from The Invisible Edge.co.uk It is already in the post. Thanks for your tips.
And many thanks for your purchase! BTW for those who did not know: the various blade embellishments on TI razors such as 'Durundal' (sword), 'Wolf & Ram' (Loup et Bellier) 'fox and chicken', 'Bison', 'Le Thernois', 'Evide Sonnant Extra' and of course 'Spartacus' are ALL TI-owned trademarks. It's TI policy to assign one trademark per dealer per country, so if you get a TI from me in the UK it will always have the 'Spartacus' logo - the blades are all the same and come in satin, satin/mirror or mirror/mirror finish - EXCEPT for razors such as 'Le Dandy' 'Le Petit francais' 'Bijou de France' and the Silverwings. And some of the 'historics'. Well at least it keeps the interest going! Oh and then you get (as a dealer) to specify the scales. It's great!
Where did you get this information? I've never heard anything like this before (which means nothing of course) but I'd like to know more...
It's personal observation. Higher the carbon content (with unalloyed steels) greater the susceptibility to staining and rusting. I noticed similar thing with stainless steels also...low carbon content stainless is almost rustproof, certain higher grade stainless steels can both stain and rust if exposed to hostile elements.
One of these Le Dandy is on the way to me right now but it´s a vintage blade. I guess it´s from the 40 or 50´s. Do you know if there´s any differences to this one? The seller told me my blade was 1/2 hollow but I guess this new one is full. Or did I get the wrong information?
I wouldn't know. It seems the one I got is full ground (though not extra hollow which is more norm for Thiers Issard razors) however I am not 100% sure. Leon wrote that my Le Dandy looks the same as his Special Coiffeur which is half hollow ground by Thiers Issard standards.
I believe the new Le Dandy here and the special couffier both use new steel, so the steel used in the vintage le dandy and the new one here is different. Not sure about the grind on the vintage Le Dandy, I'll take a look at mine. But I had a hard time telling between by 1/4 hollow ground and 3/4-full hollow ground Le Grelots so my calibrated eyeball is not worth much.
