I have been shaving with a straight razor for some time, and will admit that my technique is in need of heavy refinement. My shaves leave me only moderately satisfied, the greatest source of my dissatisfaction being the shaving of the neck, which is not only painful, but is such that the condition of the neck with its nicks and stray hairs is of unworthy of a gentleman to show his face in public, without the slightest bit of embarrassment. To remedy this problem I have taken up the habit of shaving my neck and chin with a D/E razor. However, I am an old fashioned kind of guy, and wish to use my straight razor, on my entire face. Here I ask for suggestions. Here is my usual routine. 1. Strop the razor (I use a paddle strop) 2. Shower (if a shower is inconvenient, I will wet my beard) 3. Prepare the shaving cream (I use a boar brush, with Taylor's shaving cream. I prepare the shaving cream so it resembles meringue) 4. Apply shaving cream to the parts of my face that I am about to shave (both cheeks first, then after I have finished my cheeks, to neck and chin) 5. Shave 6. Rinse (first warm water, then cold) 7. Apply aftershave. Should I spend more time on my pre-shave? Should I slowly work with my neck, and build up in increments? Should I try other products? Any help will be much appreciated.
humm some of the more better straight guys will have to help I use a straight some but not that much at all. They will come along I am sure. Fuzzy
I feel the opposite - I have no problems with straight shaving, and my neck is in great condition. When i use safety razor, then i get irritation and few nicks Paris, the good face preparation is very important, when use straight razor. Check this and this guide . Good luck !
Neck shaving problem Have you checked the direction of the hair growth? It sound like you could be shaving in the wrong direction. Run your finger in the direction you shave. It should feel smooth but if it feels like sand paper you are shaving in the wrong direction. Regards, Andrew
