My Merkur HD arrived from Lee's yesterday along with some lime Col. Conk's and the travel case for the HD. I gave it a shot today and the results were OUTSTANDING. I've got to start off by saying I definitely need a new brush as the VDH from the cheapo Walmart kit isn't cutting it. It takes entirely too long to make a good lather. I ordered a Parker brand badger brush from Amazon for $25 as a replacement and some Taylor of Old Bond St. Sandalwood Shaving Cream. For blades I just used the cheap Personna's from Walmart. When I started out I was thinking "I know I'm just going to tear my face to shreds." and "Wow this handle sure is short." After about 30 seconds I got the angle and technique down (i.e. not pushing too hard). The first pass with the grain went so well/easy that I decided to go against the grain. Results - baby smooth and no cuts or blood whatsoever. The razor also didn't irritate the my neck like my Sensor and Quattro do. I finished up with some C.O. Bigelow lemon face/body cream from Bath and Body Works that my wife had lying around which beyond its very nice scent is also incredibly soothing and moisturizing. Good lord what an improvement over cartridges. Wish I'd known about DE shaving 15 years ago. I also decided that when its time to teach my son to shave (long way off he's only 5 months old) that he's getting a nice DE.

Hopefully ill be able to post a similar no blood story after I hit the gym and stop by and get some blades for my new (old, NEW model ) Gillette ..damn I almost confused myself!
Congratulations on your first shave! you're lucky getting the stuff that fits you now you should try different lather, blade after shave and then you're going to love to try a different combination everyday. once again.. conratulations! it tooked about some weeks to get a baby butt shave. Now at the next morning after shaving, i got the same shave I use to had when I use the mach3
Congratz man I thought the same as yoiu "This handle is short" but i'm getting used to it , the difference is that I did turned my face into shreds haha. is good to see you're not making the same mistakes some of us did the first time Keep us updated
