Just spent a week in Kansas, and got a couple razors from my pack-rat uncle, as well as a Gem from an antique store. I probably could have taken better pictures than these if I'd used my cell phone, but oh well: A Gillette, unused with the original packaging. There's no datestamp or serial number to be found, which leads me to believe it was manufactured between the thirties and the fifties--however, the picture here:http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Old%20Type/1921-1922%20Old%20Type%20open%20ball.JPG seems to match everything perfectly, except that the ball end on mine is not open... the link says the razor is 1921-22. In any case, the handle is cracked through. My Merkur handle fits the Gillette head, but I was wondering if you all think it'd be a waste of time to try to rig up the handle to work again. I was thinking perhaps by tightly wrapping wire around the handle to close the crack, then gluing the ends in place... but I don't know. Razor Number Two: A teensy SE travel razor, it stores in a tube about the size of a thick pen. Razor disassembles and packs into one end, spare blades are stored in the other. I know absolutely nothing about this razor, other than that the brand name is Elgin. A cursory google search didn't turn much up, but I haven't done any real research yet. And Number Three: This is a Gem Micromatic, but I have no idea how to date it... I did see a thread somewhere about cleaning up razors that are made of plastic and bakelite though, so when I get done unpacking, I have a project or two! ...still no word on whether my Grandpa has found my great-grandfather's straight, unfortunately.
nice stuff the MM will probably be from the late 30's. There are some that are smarter then me that might say different. The little travel SE is very neat. I would probably epoxy the crack in the handle on the Gillette and then epoxy the end caps on. I think that is how it is commonly done. Fuzzy
I have one handle broken like yours. I´ve tried everything but I can not make it look ok, so I am searching for something to replace it. I won`t be original but it will be custom made.
