On my way home from the gym a few days ago I decided to pick up some almond oil at the CVS and stumbled upon "Sweet Oil 3" it has Olive, almond and Castor Oils. 4oz for a little under $2, been using it for 2 days and I like it. Definitely a bit slicker, even tho the C&E cream is already good enough on its own. Gonna add a couple drops of lavender or other EO into the mix and it should be good. Gonna order the T&H sampler to compare the preshave oils as well.
I believe in pre shave oil and it does make a difference to my shaves, tried quite a few now and currently using st james which i picked up cheap in tk max.
be sure to post back and tell us how the two compare! (personally I would love to not throw out $40 for a tiny bottle of T&H if it yields the same results as the CVS stuff...
Going to have to give this a try, as I have been using the Proraso Pre-Shave. I like the tingle feeling Proraso pre shave gives me, but it could be slicker.
I have recently started using pure almond oil as a preshave. I rub a dab on my face immediately after showering when it is still hot and steamy in the bathroom and leave it on while I make my lather and such. The difference it has made for me has been huge, recently I have skipped the XTG pass of my shaves and things feel as good if not better than usual in the end. I will also add just a drop to some of my less preferred soaps/creams and I've found it makes the most mediocre soap as nice as any of the best ones in my collection. Almond oil is great stuff, just make sure you rinse it all off.
Sorry for jumping in on this thread with this noob question, but what exactly does a pre-shave oil do for you? Does it gunk up your razor at all?
I think the idea is to soften the hair, provide additional skin lube and also provide a base upon which to build a lather. I've been using glycerin and haven't had any gunk, but when I was using Olive Oil there was a small amount of build up, nothing a warm water rinse wouldn't clean up.
For the last few years I've used plain extra virgin olive oil as a preshave and have never had a problem with build-up. A dime sized drop goes on just before the first hot towel and my skin drinks it right up. I find it adds resilience to dry skin and thus cuts down the weepers. goshawk
Preshave oils or creams... How do you use them? I use Proraso shaving cream, I know they also make some preshave product. Do you apply a preshave cream or oil, then brush on your shaving cream on top of it? Noob, knowledge....limited!
Yes, absolutely. The trick is not to use alot. A dime sized drop in the palm of your hand is enough. goshawk
I've thought of this but some of the stuff I was considering adding like aloe I imagine goes bad if it's unrefined. And I have no idea what to do with that much leftover oil.
