Though it may be heresay to some traditionalist I've had a puck of Williams Mug Soap hanging around for ages and have tried to get a decent lather from time to time to no avail. Just could not get it to work. I soaked it, I used different type brushes and just about anything else I could think of but nothing, nada, zilch. So I finally thought, "Why not grate that puck into a bowl and see what happens"? So I did and, btw, Williams is a really hard soap. I used it this morning with wonderful results. Gobs of marvelous lather with really good slip and cushion. My face felt great upon completing the shave. Very nice. I know it's not traditional but it works for me and will definetly be in the rotation. Good stuff.
I agree, Williams is a really nice soap. I started using it again about 3 years ago, but I didn't seem to get the results I used to (hard to lather, no cushion). I tried grating it, adding gylcerin, mixing grated Williams with melted VDH, and so on. Although these things helped, nothing seemed to give me the results I remembered. I aked my father (he's 84) and he said being its a hard soap he always put a little water on it before he showered. When he came out of the shower it lathered perfectly. I seem to remember one of the members here saying the same thing. So I tried it and lo and behold it worked! I was very glad because I really like the scent. It's now part of my rotation. I usually use it on Sunday mornings. Thanks for listening, Alan
Williams was all I used for more years than I care to say. I always kept it in a mug and filled it with hot water and soaked my brush while I showered. Then......NO ONE here carried ANY shaving soaps any more. So online I went and found TSD. Who knew there was so much nice stuff to try and at least I can get it delivered to my door. Anyone remember Colgate shave soap?
Yes, I can remember it. I wonder if it is it still out there? I found myself in the same predicament in regards to soap. First the razors went away, then the creams, and finally the soaps. That's pretty much how I found this site, looking for razors, blades and soap. I never dreamed there was so much stuff available on line. I thought I was destined to cartridges and canned goo for the rest of my life. Thanks for listening, Alan
Great that you got the Williams to work. It is some really good stuff. So is the Colgate.. I have several pucks that I cleaned out of the local drug stores when I moved here. It is not made anymore. There is not more around this little town either LOL Fuzzy
I used Williams for years, after Old Spice was discontinued, but I used it with a Mach 3. When I switched over to a DE, I found Williams to lack cushion. Been trying all sorts of soaps the last three years or so (currently I'm stuck on Omega), and they have all been better than Williams. However, I might give it a try again now that my technique is better (really didn't know what I was doing back when I used it all the time). Still, not a fan of grating soaps -- they should work as constituted, as I see it...
I never had much luck with Williams either. When I found out that I could get better stuff online for less than I paid for Williams in the store, I switched and never looked back. That said, like everything else out there, some people out there swear by it. Fortunately, it's cheap enough to experiment with.
I just opened up a puck of Williams and am really satisfied with the lather and the smoothness of the shave. For a soap that is under a buck in my neck if the woods, this is better than any canned goo on the market.
At the CVS pharmacy by me they want like $4 for a puck of Williams Needless to say I order most of my stuff online.
