I was looking for my first DE razor, and after much lurking, I decided on a 40's SuperSpeed. I found an amazing one on ebay...I'm sure I paid way too much
'($45), but hey it was in beautiful shape, hardly a mark on it from the pics...and I don't see myself "collecting" razors. I can not wait for it to arrive and start my new style of shaving..hope no one is upset about me being another noob driving up the costs of the old razors!

Did you order razor blades also? I just got my first razor last week, and I got a sample pack of razors too. Others suggested this was the best way to go.

I'll be hitting shave #4 a bit later....so for each shave is better than the one before it!

I wanted to compare my new DE razor to my mach 3, so I shaved one side of my face with each. The results were dramatic....

    LOL!
Yes I ordered a variety pack from West Coast Shaving:
    # Feather New Hi-Stainless Platinum (10 blades)
    # Crystal or "Israeli" (10 blades)
    # Derby Extra (5 blades)
    # Red Israeli Personna (5 blades)
    # Astra Superior Platinum (5 blades)

and I also had them throw in a package of Gillette 7's /yellow

My Omega 21047 brush is on back order..hopefully to me in the next couple of weeks...

Now all I need to do is decide on 1/2 dozen sample soaps from TSD! Soo many choices..so far I'm thinking:

    Pink Grapefruit
    Lime
    Bourbon Vanilla
    Egg Nog
    Florida Water
    Sweet Tea
    SubZero

some seller's picks on my ebay win!

I have 3 of the TSD scents you have listed, and can say without a doubt they are great! I'm sure you'll like whatever you end up choosing.

Thats a beauty of an early Super Speed! :happy088

Well.... I know the Mach ain't THAT bad!! So, I must guess you were using an adjustable on the 'nicked' side - I think you had it set WAY TOO HIGH MAN!!!! Were you using the Ultra Rare Prototype Fatboy 1-26?

It does indeed look like a very nice SS, but $45 is way too high for that particular razor. Just so you know for future reference, that style SS in that condition should be around $25-$30 at the most. Unless it is in the original case and all, then the price goes up a bit.

Regardless, they are very good shavers. Have you considered a Tech? The older Fat Handle Tech (pre-date code) are the ones to get. If you would like to try one, send me a PM. I have a few that you could borrow.

Who are you trying to fool?
This hobby is mostly about experiencing new stuff and find what better suits you :D
is like a skater telling you he just want to do only one kind of maneuver!
is like you decide that you'll never other sort cooked eggs than boiled eggs and not to try the other kinds!
is like a dog deciding it only take a piss on one kind of tree!
is like a fly deciding that it only will land in one kind of crap!

but.. i might be wrong :D
congratulations for you new aquisition! Gillette is a very gently and confortable razor (i haven't tried that one.. but they feel very alike)

    happy shavings!

Thanks guys, yeah it was in too nice a shape to pass up...jfever311, that's about what I thought it was really worth, and I had a high bid in at $32, but I got caught up in the excitement! lol...I have been scouring the antique markets/flea markets/ebay for about 2 months and never found a really nice one...so I said WTH...like I said I won't be buying more than one or two, I have too many other collecting vices! The tech was the other razor I was thinking about, maybe in a few weeks I might take you up on your gracious offer, and I must say, I belong to about 5 or 6 other forums on the net, and I can not remember such a warm welcome from members. It is really a nice thing, you all seem like a great bunch of people...Thanks!

    nice shaver

That's a nice shaver, I have several of the same vintage including a birth year (for me) '48 model, I think that series of razor gives some of the best shaves and they will last a long time. Don't worry about the price, as soon as someone says they found a perfect vintage whatever there is always someone else that got the same thing for $2 or $20 cheaper. You didn't drive up the price of anything, these auctions go to the highest bidder period and that's the price it took on that day to get that razor. If you like it and it works for you never mind what everybody else thinks about what something "should or shouldn't cost". Remember when these things were first made they were selling for around $2 to $5 and they still work just as good as ever, enjoy your razor, bc

I too have a vintage '48 superspeed. It is a sweet shaving machine. Looks like you are putting together quite a nice shaving kit. Good luck & enjoy your new razor. Keep us posted on your shaving progress!

...have both a superspeed like yours AND the Subzero soap and after shave. They (Subzero) are AWESOME! Menthol out the wazoo! Very bracing and cooling. The superspeed is very mild (at least mine is)--pretty nice for a newb.

Thanks guys, I had a few things waiting in the mail when I got back from a long holiday weekend! my SS, my blades, and a tube of cremo cream..my first shave was a very pleasant surprise! I only did two WTG passes, did not cut myself once..I was amazed..I started with the Derby blade, seemed to do a nice job, of course I have nothing else to compare it to ;) I can't wait to order my brush and receive my sample soaps from TSD..great another addiction..my wife will be SO happy!

The price you paid isn't important. You only overpaid if you are collecting and even then, if you want the item and are happy with it, you didn't pay too much.
I'm guessing that most of us paid more than we should when we either started or went back to DE shaving. With me, I'm very impatient and wanted to get a razor right away. I did some research, found a nice Krona, paid too much and was back to DE shaving after a number of years.
Since then, I've acquired a few more..some I've paid little for (at antique shops, etc) and some I've paid a premium for. My goal was to try a number of razors until I found what I'd shaved with in the past. Since my goal has been reached, I'll keep my three favorites and sell the rest thus recouping most of the money I've spent and also passing the razors along to someone who will use them. No sense in them sitting in a cabinet.
The nice thing about DEs is that you can see one, buy it, try it, and either keep it or sell it again.
    Best of luck.
