I got a huge surprise this morning. I was sitting at my computer working and the wife walks in and set these down on the desk. This is my brush and mug that I purchased some time in the late 70's and that traveled the world with me. They were used daily until I started using an electric sometime around '88 or so. It has easily been 20 years since either was used. Yes, that's a 40 year old boar brush. Probably an Old Spice brush I bought at the Navy Exchange. I really don't remember exactly when but probably around '75 or so.
That looks like a VDH boar brush, only back in 1975 I guess they would have been called Surrey. Quite amazing the design of the brush handle hasn't changed in 25 years!!
Wow, that brings back memories! My Old Spice mug disappeared many years ago. I probably gave it away when I got my next shaving mug, but I wish that I would have kept it. It's funny how the value of things change as we get older.
I fully agree, if you find a VDH boar that isn't a shredder, it's a fine brush, that performs adequately. Most products get redesigned at some point, for purposes of marketing...they are then able to market as "new and improved" even if the new version is piss poor compared to the old.
Very nice... I have a very similar mug, only difference is the boat is a little larger and directly opposite the handle. Slightly different sentimental value for me, as I inherited it from my grandfather, but oddly enough, I just dug mine out this weekend for the first time in a few years... and it felt darn good to shave with again!
