Hi folks, I found out about this forum via a completely unrelated forum (advrider.com) Last week I ordered a Parker, some Shark blades and Col. Conk. They arrived yesterday and I performed my first wet shave last night. Came out of it with 1 nick and a little razor burn on the neck. Not bad for a first try I suppose. I found the shaving process quite relaxing and it brought back memories of watching my grandfather shave. I'll be snooping around for tips while I practice over the next couple of weeks. Cheers, Erik
Welcome! Enjoy your stay! Sounds like your well setup to get you going! I'd order a blade sampler pack to give some different baldes a try, to see which ones you like best. I havent actually tried the sharks, but of the ones I have tried so far, Astra superior platinum and crystals are my favourites!
Welcome to TSD! Be sure to check out the January Newbie Give Away. You may also want find the Shave School Master Stickies a good place to start. Enjoy your stay, Erik
Welcome to The Shave Den Erik, a great community of guys and gals that enjoy wet shaving! I hope you enjoy your stay. Sound like you had a good first D/E shave. :signs107 Things will only get better from here on out, enjoy!
Thanks for the warm welcome folks. Tonight will be shave #2; we'll see how it goes. BTW, I did order a sampler from West Coast Shaving. It will be interesting to compare the different blades. Regards, Erik
I'm in almost the exact same boat as you are. I think a huge part of this deal is working on building your lather. I've also used Col. Conks. It seemed okay. Have you thought about any creams?
Col Conks is all I have at the moment. I made a more serious effort to work up some lather last night and thought it still mediocre. I had a better shave last night than the first time however. I didn't nick myself and the razor burn was minor. I'll have to give cream a try.
Conk and other glycerin soaps w/o clay don't offer great protection. If you're after local and inexpensive (typical reasons for buying Col. Conk), I'd recommend either Van Der Hagen Deluxe soap (Wal Mart and many drug stores) or Kiss My Face cream (organic food stores). Both give better protection than Col Conk., are low cost, and widely available. If you are willing to mail-order and spend more, the list gets really long.
If interested in trying a cream, I see that there is a Bath & Body works located near you, so you should be able to pick up some C.E. Bigelow cream which is really re-branded Proraso. For good measure, I'll put up a good soap lathering video for you, just in case you haven't seen it yet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIsj58fqVjY
Great advice folks! There's a Bath and Body works a couple of miles from my work. I'll swing by on my way home tonight. And thanks for the vid. I definitely haven't been getting a nice cream to my lather. I'll try again tonight!
